Rocks Falling from the Sky - a Poem
Falling Rocks Down the Mountanside Looked like Magic - What Caused Them I Wondered?
we often drove up the Catskill mountains
to get out of the hot summer days
in the flat lands of Brooklyn.
I remember as we drove up the mountainside
I would hear rumbling
and when I looked up I saw
all the rocks falling down from the sky.
Sometimes there a few rocks falling
Other times there were more
At times big boulder would fall from the sky
and looked like it would hit the car.
I must have asked this question over
and over again to my dad
Why are the rocks falling falling from the sky?
and what if they hit the car?
The years passed
We never again drove
up the mountainside
and I never thought of
the sky or the falling rocks.
Years and years later
when I had children of my own
and even a grandchild or two
you notice I had grown.
I moved to Florida and
my husband died
I needed to go on with my life
so I registered at the Community College.
Then one day I decided to sign up
for a summer class
I took the course
entitled Geology.
I was no longer a young child
when I finally learned
Why the rocks Fell down from the sky
along the mountainside
I learned all about the
'Landslides" and
how and why they occur
and that they are a natural occurrence
that changes the shape of the earth.
One is never too old to learn about the wonders of the earth

I never wondered about that... nicely done.
Sondra, I know it's weird, but I couldn't help feeling sad when I read this, particularly: "We never again drove up the mountainside." But you brought my spirits up at the end just by fulfilling your quest and finding out why the rocks fall. Actually, this is quite an insightful piece! BTW, geology was one of my favorite courses in college. To this day I still remember so much of what I learned, because it's so fascinating...unlike my four years of French!
Very creative, fun!
I am going to do generic (copy/paste) comments for some
time now because I need to make money from doing more
writing assignments. I hope you understand.
Gravity and geology yield rocks falling down. Good for you to learn about both and pass along the knowledge to your grandkids.
it also proves that we are never too old to learn and that there is always something new to learn.
We spend our whole lives learning, don't we?
I love your style of writing. It flows so naturally!
So creative!
