Rodel Mayol: A "Magnum Force" to Be Reckoned With

The Latest Addition to the Growing List of Filipino Boxing Champions

Joey Liam
After his fifth attempt to bring home a world title in the past two years, Filipino warrior Rodel "Magnum Force" Mayol finally won the WBC light flyweight diadem when he knocked out the long-time champion from Mexico, Edgar Sosa, in the second round . No, not with an intentional head butt as the Team Sosa and other people insinuate but with a barrage of powerful and wicked blows delivered with exact precision. Mayol pounded Sosa with damaging left and right combinations after the referee took a point away from the former after the two fighters clashed heads which cut the cheek bone of Sosa. That point deduction of the referee actually spelled doom for Sosa as Mayol ended the fight with a knock out, fearing another hometown decision loss in Mexico.

When asked if he would give Sosa an immediate rematch, Mayol readily agreed to prove once and for all that he indeed deserved to be a champion, together with other Filipino title holders: Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao, Nonito "The Flash" Donaire, and Brian "Hawaiian Punch"Viloria. Mayol has also earned new monikers for his amazing boxing style such as "Kid Rapido" and "Pacquiaoito" (little Pacquiao) from his Mexican fans. Oftentimes, he is compared with one of the best Mexican champion in the straw weight and light flyweight divisions, Ricardo "El Finito" Lopez, because of their similar boxing techniques and no holds barred destruction of their opponents.

Prior to this championship bout with Edgar Sosa, Mayol fought the best champions in the world in the minimum weight and light flyweight divisions: Eagle Kyowa of Thailand, Ivan Calderon of Puerto Rico (twice), and Ulises Solis of Mexico. He rocked all of these champions with his devastating power but failed to take away any belt from them due to lack of preparation and team management issues. But now that he is managed by none other than the pound-for-pound legend Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao, his loyal fans will see a transformed warrior and a true champion in his title defenses and future title fights.

After his victory, Mayol acknowledged Pacquiao's support to propel his boxing career: "I would like to thank Manny Pacquiao for helping me and not losing faith in me." Now that's the spirit, Rodel "Pacquiaoito" Mayol! Good luck in all your future fights.

Boxing is an interesting sport for me. I don't like the fact that boxers hurt each other but the science behind it. I am just amaze how pugilists get in that toughness mode when they get in the ring. Thanks for the feedback, RC.

Interesting writing even though I don't follow boxing.
