Rodent Repellent Trash Bags

Trash Bags Win, Rodents Lose

A company has developed a new trash bag that is resistant to rats and raccoons according to a report! Rats are known to be able to chew through anything with their sharp teeth including walls plumbing and even bricks! In New York there are according to a televised news report at least 500 rats for every mile of sewer line. New York is unusually full of rats as well as raccoons in the outer boroughs. No matter where you live in the city, there are rats. If they are not found in your home or basement, then in they are certainly in area parks and subways. The Pied Piper of Hamlin would be quite welcomed here.

Metal Trash Cans have been the only hope to keep trash out of the reach of trash predators. They have to be tightly sealed. City and State Parks however do not have the luxury of using tightly sealed metal cans. There is lots of trash and the most practical way to handle it is with large disposable plastic trash bags,

Poisons that kill rats are also dangerous for children to be around. This new trash bag however uses repellents that are not harmful to humans. How does this magic trash bag work? The company that invented the bags found that rodents have sensitive sinuses! The bags are said to have a Mint scent.

The New York based building and maintenance supply Jad Corporation is the forty year old family owned company from Jackson Heights, Queens that created these bags now being used in the New York City and State Parks. Since Rodents don't bite into the bags, there is money being saved on maintenance because the bags don't have to be picked up as often.

It was not mentioned during the televised report if the bags are biodegradable or if they would be able to deteriorate in a landfill. These are points of great interest to those who are trying to "Go Green" and to protect the environment. In an effort to reduce plastic bags and their effect, people are encouraged to carry their own reusable cloth bags to the supermarket. Trash from the parks however is not the same as household trash and needs to be handled differently. Hopefully the new bags are environmentally safe. They are certainly a winner when it comes to resisting rats and raccoons!

We have raccoons in my area. Rats can be found everywhere. I wonder if planting Mint would be a deterrent. What do you think?
