Roger Clemens is Indicted by a Federal Grand Jury for Lying to Congress About Steroid and HGH Use

JL Smith
Roger Clemens, according to www.espn.com, was indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday August, 19 2010 for allegedly lying to congress about his use of steroids and HGH. This indictment of Roger Clemens has six counts which include False Statements, Perjury, and Obstruction of Justice. How did we get to this place where Roger Clemens, arguably the best pitcher of all time, is indicted by a Federal Grand Jury for something related to baseball?

WHY WAS ROGER CLEMENS INDICTED AND NOT OTHER PLAYERS
There have been plenty of current and former major league baseball players who have admitted to, or tested positive for steroid and HGH use. Why are these other players not being charged with perjury and making false statements like Roger Clemens? The answer is simple. Other players have admitted to using performance enhancing drugs. Of course they usually did so because they were caught red handed either by a drug test or eye witness testimony. These other players, unlike Roger Clemens, did not insult our intelligence by denying the obvious. So even though steroid and HGH use was rampant in baseball, only Roger Clemens is being charged with a crime.

COULD ROGER CLEMENS HAVE AVOIDED THE INDICTMENT OF THE FEDERAL GRAND JURY
Roger Clemens went before Congress to become the poster boy for major league players who did not use performance enhancing drugs. Congress believes that Roger Clemens knew the whole time that he was guilty of using steroids and HGH. Whether or not that is true is anyone's guess. But Clemens does look suspicious. Many believe that Roger Clemens wanted everyone to think that he was the greatest major league pitcher of all time. And so of course if Clemens had admitted to using HGH or steroids it would have cast a shadow over his career. So instead of keeping his mouth shut in the first place, Roger Clemens decided to sing his own praises of denial to the United States Congress. And then when it appeared, through eye witness testimony of his trainer, that Roger Clemens had used HGH all we heard was a denial. It appeared to many that Roger Clemens lied when the truth sounded better. If Roger Clemens had been quiet and quickly apologized for his HGH use then he would not be facing an indictment from the Federal Grand Jury. Instead, it appeared to many that he boasted and bragged and then got busted in a lie.

IS ROGER CLEMENS GUILTY OF THE CHARGES HE HAS BEEN INDICTED FOR
I certainly cannot say for sure that Roger Clemens is guilty. However, I am positive that
Clemens has not been completely honest. My personal opinion is that Roger Clemens used steroids and HGH along with everybody else. I do, however, understand that it is possible that Roger Clemens has been railroaded by a huge conspiracy. If that is the case, then Roger Clemens should be excited about the opportunity to have his day in court. I hope this is the case. No one would be happier to see Roger Clemens exonerated of all charges from this indictment. But I am not going to hold my breath.
