Roger Ebert Apologizes for Ill-Timed Ryan Dunn 'Jackass' Comment on Twitter; Bam Margera Fights Back
Legendary film critic Roger Ebert is calling his comments made on Twitter after 'Jackass' star Ryan Dunn's sudden death "unseemly" and went on to say he didn't mean to sound cruel when he tweeted "friends don't let Jackasses drink and drive."
Dunn and his friend Zachary Hartwell were both killed in a fiery car crash in West Goshen, Pennsylvania early Monday morning. While toxicology results are pending Dunn tweeted a picture of him, Hartwell and a few friends drinking at the West Chester bar Barnaby's in the hours before his death.
The pictures, along with the circumstances of the crash, led many to assume as the news leaked out that Dunn had been too drunk to drive when he left the bar around 3AM Monday morning. The manager of Barnaby's confirmed to CNN that Dunn and his friends were at the bar, but he appeared fine before he left.
According to witnesses and a police investigation Dunn was behind the wheel at the time of the crash and may have been traveling close to 100 MPH in a 50 MPH zone when the crash happened. Dunn apparently missed a posted 25 MPH turn and hit his breaks, leaving skid marks that were 60 feet long. His 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 hit a guard rail and went airborne before slamming into a tree and bursting into flames. An autopsy so far shows Dunn died as a result of blunt force trauma and thermal trauma.
When Ebert took to his @ebertchicago twitter account Monday afternoon he posted a link to a story on the 'Jackass' actor's death and followed up that tweet with his now infamous comment, "friends don't let Jackasses drink and drive" that he said was an attempt at humor. The backlash on twitter was immediate, with many celebrities, including Perez Hilton, tweeting that the comment was too soon and insensitive, especially without knowing whether the alcohol played a roll in the crash.
The Chicago Tribune said in a story Tuesday Ebert admitted in a blog posted on their website he was "probably too quick to tweet" when he made the comment about Ryan Dunn's death.
But Dunn's longtime best friend, fellow 'Jackass star Bam Margera, didn't take too well to Roger Ebert's tweet, instead laying into Ebert in a profanity laced series of tweets telling Ebert to "shut his fat f****ing mouth."
Margera posted on Twitter, @BAM_MARGERA I just lost my best friend, I have been crying hysterically for a full day and piece of s**t roger ebert has the gall to put in his 2 cents and @BAM_MARGERA About a jackass drunk driving and his is one, f**k you! Millions of people are crying right now, shut your fat f***ing mouth!
In his defense Ebert said in his blog post, To begin with, I offer my sympathy to Ryan Dunn's family and friends, and to those of Zachary Hartwell, who also died in the crash. I mean that sincerely. It is tragic to lose a loved one. I also regret that my tweet about the event was considered cruel. It was not intended as cruel. It was intended as true.
