Roger Federer Wins 15th Career Grand Slam Final with 2009 Wimblodon Championship

In the longest Wimbledon final set in the history of the tournament, Roger Federer won the 2009 Wimbledon men's final an epic battle. The new longest Wimbledon final set was an extremely hard fought set between defending champion Roger Federer and American Andy Roddick. The longest Wimbledon final set ended up taking 30 games to complete, smashing the former record for the longest Wimbledon final set. That longest Wimbledon final set ended up going to Roger Federer by a score of 16-14 to give Federer the match win. In accomplishing the longest Wimbledon final set, Federer vs. Roddick places itself in history as one of the greatest Wimbledon finals ever.

Roger Federer won the 2009 Wimbledon finals, and with it attained a record 15th Grand Slam title for his career. With Roger Federer winning his 15th career Grand Slam, which breaks a tie that he had with Pete Sampras for the most Grand Slam titles for a men's tennis player. The victory also propelled Federer to his sixth consecutive Wimbledon title, a mark that in itself is a record. The inspiring match play from both Roger Federer and Andy Roddick is one for the books, and even the scoring of the sets shows just how close the 2009 Wimbledon Men's final really was.

The scoring for the 2009 Wimbledon men's final was 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14 in favor of Roger Federer, but it could have easily been Andy Roddick's match with a couple of breaks going the other direction. The climax of the 2009men's Wimbledon final came with Federer leading 15-14 and a tired Roddick mishitting a seemingly easy forehand. It was Roddick's serve that Federer was able to break in order to win the final 30th game of the fifth set, and with it Federer won his sixth Wimbledon title.

Andy Roddick came into the 2009 Wimbledon finals having made it to the finals himself against Federer two times before. He played his best match of those finals, and possibly his best match of the 2009 Wimbledon, but it ended up being not quite enough to stop the freight-train that people have come to know as Roger Federer. Federer is sitting at the top of the tennis world right now, and by adding his 15th Grand Slam title to his ever-building resume, he is quickly setting himself up as possibly the best tennis player to ever live. The Wimbledon victory will surely put Roger Federer back in the #1 spot that had been held by Rafael Nadal heading into the tournament.

It wasn't Federer's sixth consecutive win. Nadal won it in 2008.

He's definitely the guy to beat during July, that's for sure. And what a great tournament. One of the few tennis matches I watch, but I watch Wimbledon annually, just like the MLB All-Star game, the Indy, the Ky Derby, and the Super Bowl. Never miss 'em.
