Rolaids Softchews Recall Latest Recall for McNeil

Should Americans Quit Buying Their Products?

Carly Hart
On Dec. 9, 2010, McNeil Consumer Healthcare issued a voluntary recall for Rolaids Softchews, including all lots of Rolaids Extra Strength Softchews, Rolaids Extra Strength Plus Gas Soft Chews, and Rolaids Multi-symptom Plus Anti-Soft Chews sold in the U.S.. This recall was done voluntarily after the company began investigating customer complaints of foreign material, such as metal and wood, present in the product.

The Rolaids Softchews recall is only the latest in a string of recalls issued by McNeil within the past year. Early 2010 saw McNeil recall several over-the-counter medicines, including some Rolaids products, for a musty odor they believed was caused by shipping pallets. It only got worse from there.

A quick peek at McNeil's news page features a list of cringeworthy recalls for 2010, including a large number of recalls for children's medicines.

In late April, McNeil recalled several varieties of Children's Tylenol, Children's Motrin and Children's Zyrtec because of concerns that these products might contain higher than normal concentrations of active ingredients. The Dec. 9 recall of Rolaids Softchews only underscores McNeil's inability to maintain quality control at its plants.

Consumer Angst at Near-Constant Recall Notices

Having been affected by several of McNeil's recalls this year, though I was made whole by way of a refund or high-value coupon, I have found my confidence in McNeil greatly affected. I no longer purchase any of their over-the-counter medicines for my family. In fact, I couldn't make myself purchase their product, even though it would be free to me. Instead, I gave my coupons away. The constant barrage of recalls has eroded any faith I had in McNeil when the first recall hit the news wire. Perhaps I am jaded because I was directly affected by the January, March and July recalls.

Instead, taking my doctor's advice, we are purchasing generic versions of McNeil's name-brand medicines. These generics have no recall notices and are a bit cheaper to buy. If and when McNeil can again be a trusted brand that means quality, then and only then will I feel that I can return to using their products. Perhaps 2011 will bring an end to recalls that erode consumer confidence.
