Romantic Getaways in Canada

Karen Meeker
Visiting a foreign country can be very exciting. There is so much new to see and so many things to learn about that it can sometimes be overwhelming. One country that should not be overlooked for such wonderful and romantic adventures is Canada. No matter how many trips I have made to this outstanding country, there are always plenty of things to see and do. If you and a loved one are planning to visit Canada, there are some sites that you should not miss.

My husband and I have the best of both worlds when it comes to travel. We live in the United States and only minutes from the Canadian border. Traveling to Canada is one of our most favorite things to do especially if we are looking for a romantic getaway for the two of us. Everyone has heard of Niagara Falls and we ourselves have been there many times. It is beautiful and it is romantic, but anyone can find information for that area. Instead, I am going to tell you about two other areas that are not as large or as well know, yet they are absolutely the right place for romance while in Canada. The places I would recommend for romantic travel in Canada are the Morrisburg/Iroquois area and Gananoque.

In the summer, we have the good fortune of not having to plan. Therefore, often when we go to Canada, we try to find something new and fun to do by just driving. This is how we stumbled upon the Morrisburg and Iroquois area. These two quaint little towns are side by side and have so much to offer a couple that just wants to spend some quality time together. Located in the province of Ontario, they are not full of amusement parks or crowded with tourists. Instead, for entertainment you might shop away the morning at the flea market, take in an afternoon play at Upper Canada Playhouse, or possibly enjoy a picnic and stroll with your loved one on the water's edge. For lodging, there are choices from camping to quality hotels. Looking for something on the fancier, but still on the reasonable side, stop in Morrisburg at the McIntosh Country Inn & Conference Center. If a small and basic motel is more your style, don't miss the Iroquois Motel in Iroquois. Both locations are easy to find, clean, and well run. When you need to get away with the person you love, this is an area that should not be overlooked.

Another small city with lots of ambiance is Gananoque. Found in the beautiful Thousand Islands region, you can't help but enjoy a relaxing stay here. In Gananoque, you will find the full service Thousand Islands Casino for the risk taker or you might want to explore one of the many boat cruises of the St. Lawrence River and of course historic Boldt Castle. There is a wonderful playhouse to take in a show, museums to see, and some wonderful shopping to enjoy. One of the best things about this area is that everything seems to move at your own pace. Things are not overly crowded or rushed and there are choices for any type of travelers. Lodging is abundant in this area and you will have no problem finding something nice within your budget. Since romance is the name of the game, be sure to take in a romantic dinner at one of the many establishments like The Lobster Trap while in town. If you have never been to Gananoque, you are missing out on a true treasure of Canada.

Bigger is not always better. Sometimes when you and your loved one want to getaway, you want to avoid the crowds and the typical tourist locations. Both of these places offer something different and fun for the couples that need that break. I have no doubt that if you take time to visit one of both of these areas, you will return again when looking for that something special to do without the fuss.

Sounds like my kind of place! Been to Vancouver, but I would love a more low key area like you describe.
