Romantic Love Songs for Valentine's Day

In the Mood for Love: Ten Love Songs for Valentine's Day

Khara E. House
"I'm in the mood for love, simply because you're near me." "When I fall in love, it will be forever." "You are so beautiful to me." These are classic lines of love from some classically romantic songs. There's not much harder than taking a list of some of the top romantic songs and love ballads available and picking out ten of them as the most romantic songs for Valentine's Day. Yet here you'll find a list of ten great songs for Valentine's Day. Create a special treat for your number one love by creating a mixed CD of these, and other, classic love songs that will remind him or her all year long just how much you care!

"The Way He Makes Me Feel" (Barbra Streisand)

If you've never seen Yentl, you may never have heard this beautiful song. In it, Streisand sings of the love she feels for a man who may never know just how much she cares. The song begins, "There's no chill and yet I shiver/ There's no fire and yet I burn." It is full of heartfelt expressions of a love that must be hidden yet insists upon pushing itself to the surface. The song beautifully expresses how enigmatic, frightening, and fulfilling the feelings of love can be.

"A Song for the Road" (David Ford)

Ford speaks of love in more modern terms and perhaps more realistically than most. In one section of the song, he sings, "I don't like to use words like forever, but I will love you 'til the end of today," and admits that "tomorrow when I remember everything that you are, you know I'll fall for you anyway." The song reminds listeners that love is a bit of give and take, but it's still worthwhile.

"God Only Knows" (The Beach Boys)

Only a song like this could pair lyrics like "If you should ever leave me, the world would still go on, believe me" with "God only knows what I'd do without you." It reminds us that love binds together as one what once was two; losing it is like losing half of oneself. Whether an expression to the love of your life or a best friend, it's a great way to remind someone just how much they've meant to your life.

"A Whole New World" (from Disney's Aladdin)

Aladdin has some of the most stunning music in Disney's history, and this song is probably its crowning glory! The song speaks of the magic and transforming experience of love. Love not only brings two hearts together; it takes the lovers into "a whole new world!" The "indescribable feelings" of flying translate brilliantly into the experience of falling in love.

"Kiss from a Rose" (Seal)

Oddly enough, this song was first featured in a Batman movie; not exactly the most romantic place for a love song to appear, but it managed to linger anyway! In this song, love is "my power, my pleasure, my pain"; the lyrics speak of it as "a strong addiction" that can't be denied. The imagery in this song is simply stunning.

"Lullaby (Goodnight My Angel)" (Billy Joel)

One of the most beautiful lyrics from this song, in my mind, is, "I think I know what you've been asking me/ I think you know what I've been trying to say." Love transcends words that can't be spoken, and goes beyond all the speechlessness it causes. In this song, love says that "you'll always be a part of me." The final lines are just as beautiful: "Someday we'll all be gone, but lullabies go on and on/ They never die, that's how you and I will be."

"I Will Be Here" (Steven Curtis Chapman)

This song's beauty lies in the breadth of the love it expresses. In the song, the love spoken of through the lyrics lingers through a number of hard times in the lives of the lovers, from days when "the sun does not appear" and times when "in the dark you lose sight of love." This love will be there "so you can cry on my shoulder," in youth and old age, when you have to speak your mind and when you have no words to say. This is one of the few songs that expresses an "in the hard times" love, which earns it a place on this list.

"To Really Love a Woman" (Bryan Adams)

This song gives male listeners a lesson in romancing the women in their lives: "give her some faith, hold her tight." One of the most beautiful lines in the song says, "And when you see your unborn children in her eyes, you'll know you really love a woman." Consider this song an instruction manual in making the special lady in your life feel special!

"First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (Roberta Flack)

The first line of this song says it all: "The first time ever I saw your face/ I thought the sun rose in your eyes." This song tells the story of a love that will last "to the end of time." It's a beautiful song for a relationship. It both reiterates that early love stage of feeling as though you've just found "love at first sight" and that point in a relationship when you look back over the years to remember those first moments you thought this might be the love you've been waiting for.

"At Last" (Etta James)

The number one romantic song for Valentine's Day is a song whose first few bars of instrumental music speak for it. Those fist few notes of the violin strings build up both the melody and emotion in this song. It's a classic love song that's been recorded and rerecorded over and over, and yet never loses the potency of the original. This is the love that you've been waiting for, a love that has "come alive" at last, a dream realized. This song speaks to all the lingering ideas of love through the ages as a dream, a thrill, a place of blue skies and clover, and that final journey until "here we are in heaven, and you are mine . . . at last!"

I have to pat you on the back for naming "At Last" the top song. I am partial, however, to "Hold me thrill me kiss me," by Mel Carter.

Great list! The Beach Boys song is the theme song for the HBO show "Big Love" so it always has a different connotation for me ;)
