Romantic Playlist: Unrequited Love Songs

We've all been there and experienced it: Unrequited love. You know how it is - loving and admiring someone from afar or loving someone that you know you can't have. It's a torturous type of love that is kept secret or hidden and while the object of affection may never know the other person's feelings, the one who is admiring dreams of one day making their love known. Here are some great songs that know all about waiting on someone, loving from afar and looking but not touching.

"To Make You Feel My Love" by Garth Brooks is from the "Hope Floats" soundtrack and is a great song about unrequited love maybe becoming reciprocated love. This is one of my favorite movies and this song just speaks to me about a deep love that is what dreams are made of.

"Someone to Watch Over Me" by Amy Winehouse - Winehouse covers the Ella Fitzgerald version of this gorgeous song written by George and Ira Gershwin and has become a classic. This song is about someone who is looking for love and knows that he is out there somewhere - maybe looking for her. It is beautiful and heart wrenching in lyrics but with Winehouse's vocals, it makes me shiver, and in a good way.

"Good Enough" by Evanescence is a song that I love but almost can't stand to listen to. It evokes such emotion that is a mixture of pain and joy and longing. The songs wonders "am I good enough for you to love me?" and talks about being mesmerized and yes, even captivated, by the object of love.

"Love Song" by Tesla tells of a love that is waiting, right in front of you when you think that love has been lost. The guitar intro is especially beautiful and this has long been a favorite of mine.

"To Be With You" by Mr. Big is a man's hopes of someday being with the woman he loves.

"Hole Hearted" by Extreme is a feel-good song about someone who has pursued happiness but discovered that nothing delivers. They realize that a certain someone is what they need to fill the hole in their heart. This song is upbeat and catchy and you can't help singing along and tapping your foot.

"Alone" by Heart is a great song about being in love with someone and keeping it secret. The best line is "Till now I always got by on my own, I never really cared until I met you."

"Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls is a beautiful song about being willing to give up everything for the person you love while admiring them from afar.

"Hello" by Lionel Richie is a classic that I remember from grade school. The song tells the story of longing for someone and wishing that they were longing for you also. "I've been alone with you inside my mind, and in my dreams I've kissed your lips a thousand times," and "I long to see the sunlight in your hair and tell you time and time again how much I care" are two of the most memorable lines in this unrequited love song.

"Bittersweet" by Apocalyptica is a haunting song that tears at the heartstrings. The lyrics talk about being under the spell of a woman the singer can't have for one reason or another. He is obsessed with her and wants the spell broken but at the same time he doesn't. It is, aptly put, bittersweet.

And last but not least, if you can forget the creepy stalker aspect of "Every Breath You Take," by The Police, then yeah it fits with the theme of unrequited love or admiring someone from afar. Yes, it's just a little unnerving to listen to someone singing "Every breath you take, every move you make, I'll be watching you."
