Romantic Weekend Escapes Near New York City

New York City is a tough place to live year-round. Hours can click away so fast you forget to eat dinner. Days run into each other. Weeks disappear like magic. Months fade before you can change the calendar. Seasons come and go like commuters at rush hour. My point? Sometimes New Yorkers just need to slow things down. And what better way to do that than with a romantic weekend escape? Here are some suggestions for romantic weekend escapes near New York City.

The Poconos. The Poconos is a mountainous region located in northeastern Pennsylvania. About thirty or so miles north of Allentown, the region spans over two thousand square miles and boasts a growing population of approximately three hundred thousand. Moreover, the Poconos is the quintessential romantic getaway. If you have ever seen a commercial for the Poconos, you know what to expect: horseback riding, tennis, hot tubs shaped like champagne glasses, and yes, champagne. Many New Yorkers fall so in love with the Poconos, they purchase property. Some even make the region their permanent residence. Whether you are looking to enjoy a weekend of vigorous exercise and fun-filled activities, or a relaxing escape where you can kick back in a bath with a paperback novel, the Poconos is bound to be one of your very best bets. So pack the car and take a drive to experience the beauty of the Pocono Mountains region.

Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Also known as Amish Country, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, makes for a terrific romantic weekend escape near New York City. Talk about slowing down. Leave your worries in the city and take a drive to Lancaster, where patience is truly a virtue. You might just get stuck in traffic here...behind an Amish horse and buggy. Although Lancaster is geographically close to New York City, you will feel like you're a world away. You and your partner can bask in the privacy of a region that doesn't change. Whether you spend your time watching the Amish plow their fields or watching pay-per-view movies in your hotel room, you will certainly slow things down and enjoy yourself in a beautiful, romantic setting.

Jersey Shore. The Jersey Shore is a great romantic weekend escape near New York City year-round. During the winter, the Jersey Shore is quiet and unique. No matter how cold it gets, the Atlantic Ocean is still here, along with wide abandoned beaches. Many of the towns of the Jersey Shore, including Point Pleasant, are quaint and cozy with fine bars and restaurants. During the summer, the boardwalks are bustling. You and your beau will enjoy long walks along the water, rides and other amusements, and some delicious salt water taffy. In addition to Point Pleasant, you should look into Toms River, Seaside Heights, Belmar, Manasquan, and further down south at areas like Wildwood.

Atlantic City. If you are looking for an exciting romantic escape, take a trip south to Atlantic City. Atlantic City, New Jersey, is a thrilling spot packed with casinos and fine dining, with a beach and boardwalk of its own. Whether you are a heavy gambler or someone who just enjoys the slots, Atlantic City is certain to please. Plenty of unique and spectacular hotels line the strip. My favorite is The Borgata. More classic hotels include The Tropicana. Wherever you stay, you are bound to have a fun and romantic weekend in Atlantic City.

New Yorkers should try to take a few weekends outside the city every year, if only to maintain their sanity. If you don't keep a car because you live in Manhattan, rent one. It's inexpensive and easy, and it'll get you to where you want to go. Each of these areas has inexpensive hotels, so don't let a tight budget keep you within city limits. Enjoy these romantic weekend escapes near New York City.
