Ron Howard Shoe in Despite Academy Pundits?

Slumdog Millionaire May Fill the Recessionary Bill

Loraine Alkire
Who will win the Director's Guild Awards on January 31 and which directors will bring home, The Academy Award for Best Director on February 22?

In general these two go hand in hand, win the DGA and then win the Oscar, with few exceptions. I've seen Christopher Nolan's Batman 'The Dark Knight' and that's pretty good, but I haven't seen: Gus Van Sant's Movie 'Milk' Starring Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, the slain gay rights activist; Or Ron Howard's Frost/Nixon though the previews look great. (This is just my kind of movie. Leave it up to my childhood imaginary friend Opie Taylor, the master of wishing people into cornfields, to walk away with both the DGA and the Oscar--maybe)

Or it could be Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire"; Or David Finchers, 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button?

Who? Who is going to play kiss the Oscar in February? Directors Guild Awards are quite important in moving a director along his way to having something metallic, shiny and masculine, that doesn't even have to be hidden in the night stand.

I don't know who to root for really, Nolan directed a huge favorite of mine, Memento, so there is a soft place in my heart for him. And then there's Ron Howard, I usually love his movies, the serious, and not so serious like Splash for instance. And then Ron's 'A Beautiful Mind' also happens to be one of my all time favorite movies; an unforgettable movie.

I take it back, I have seen David Finchers, 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' and while I thought it was good, well let's just leave it at that. Sidebar: [Please take no offense at this Brad, I'm still waiting for you, even though it looks like things are working out with you and Brangelina, you may grow bored with such perfection, intelligence, selflessness and compassion and decide you need someone forever fighting to lose ten pounds. I don't have as much money as her but sometimes my writing residuals add up to over 100 dollars a month, we don't have to go into my issues with PMS right now, I just want you to know I make a better apple pie than she does, of that I'm sure.] And back to the topic at hand. I know the story of Harvey Milk will be a tear jerker; I'm always a sucker for travesties of justice.

And then there is Boyle's 'Slumdog Millionaire' another underdog story to about trying to win big on a game show. I'm a sucker for the Mumbai street kid and the Indian game show theme. That's the American Dream right? Winning big on game shows and making a killing at Fantasy Football. I haven't seen much of Boyle but it wouldn't be the first time I was pleasantly surprised. I think this will make a great recession era film.

TTFN- See you at the movies!

I wished Andy Griffith was my Daddy and that Opie would go get lost in a corn field somewhere and me and Aunt Bea could bake apple pies for Brad Pitt.
