Ron Paul Oust Mitt Romney in Republican Straw Poll

Before the Tea Party became famous for their grass roots organizing, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was a Republican leader whom seemed to hold all the cards pertaining to his presidential bid in the 2009 election run-off race.

Texas congressman Ron Paul ousted former Gov. Mitt Romney in the presidential straw poll on Saturday; Paul won by 30 percent, in contrast to Mitt Romney 23 percent.

Ron Paul has a loyal base of libertarians who would like no better to see him be the number one candidate to run in the 2012 presidential race, and represent the conservative party.

There were two other high-profile Republicans who did not participate or attend the conservative affair. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee were way below poll standings, the two conservative candidates ranked only in the single digits.

The conservative poll hot topic evolved around reducing government spending, in addition to reducing the size of the federal government.

The Washington Times co-sponsored the CPAC event.
