I first heard about volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House Charities, located at 622 West Deming Place in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, from my niece, whose school was involved in volunteering there. She said it was one of the most rewarding experiences of her life, and suggested that I also give it a try. My niece volunteered as a cook to prepare meals for families returning to the house from a long day at the hospital, where they were visiting their sick children. She, with about ten other volunteers cooked for approximately thirty people. My niece and her volunteer group purchased all the food, while the Ronald McDonald House provided the kitchen, pots, pans and utensils. After the guests have finished their meals, the volunteers are asked to stay after to clean the kitchen and put away leftovers. Although you do not need superior culinary skills, you do need to have the ability to cook.

There are so many other volunteer opportunities that you can sign up for if you prefer not to cook. You can help out answering the phones, greeting visitors, organizing craft projects for the kids, holding food drives or helping to organize fund raising events. Also, if you do not have the time to donate to the Ronald McDonald House, or if you would prefer to donate in some other way, they also accept monetary donations If you would like more information, call 773-348-5322.
