While the city of Mobile, Ala., puts on its largest party of the year, Mardi Gras, many are mourning the loss of Officer Steven Green. The officer was brutally killed during a routine transport of a robbery and attempted arson suspect, Lawrence Waller Jr. During a routine filming of his "perp walk," local camera crews caught the suspect promising to "be back" and claims to be part of a "movie."
Camera footage from Mobile's local channel, WPMI captured footage of the suspect removing a razor blade or box blade from a pendant located on a necklace he wore. Despite being handcuffed, Waller was able to palm the blade, using a few minutes later during a savage attack in the sally port of the Mobile Metro Jail. It is unclear, at this time, how Waller was able to remove his handcuffs.
After stabbing Officer Green, Waller stole the officer's vehicle and led police on a wild chase through the city of Mobile. Armed with ammunition from the deceased officer's vehicle, the suspect fired on police officers for three hours during the chase and while he attempted to hide out under a home off Daytona Drive. Daytona Drive is located near main thoroughfare busy Dauphin Island Parkway. Officer Mark Johnson was shot during the melee but is expected to make a full recovery. Local residents report that both city and county police officers reported to the scene.
The suspect's rampage was brought to an end by a tactical law enforcement team after a grueling three-hour standoff. Mobile's District Attorney, Ashley Rich says that the suspect's death seems to be justified.
According to the City of Mobile's Police Department website, funeral services for the slain officer will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Radney's Funeral Home on Dauphin Street. Officer Green had been on the job for less than a year and is survived by his wife and three children. Friends of the family have created a Facebook page, "Remembering MPD Officer Green" to memorialize the life of the coach and officer.
