After coming into a little money, a close family member decided to purchase the bed of their dreams, from Room and Board's online catalog. With several delivery options to choose from, they settled with the "in home" delivery. This option cost an extra $200.00 more, but not only was the bed delivered, it was assembled and set up, with all trash removed. I remember the phone conversation as if it was yesterday "you've got to come see my bed, it came today and it is beautiful". The bed was beautiful, it was a 4 poster king size solid Maple bed. The bed was extremely heavy, as the wood was very thick, almost to thick for my taste. No questions asked, the piece was bold, and guaranteed to become a heirloom piece of furniture. As I was drooling, wondering how nice it would be to even own a bedroom large enough to display a bed that big, and still have room to walk around in, I had to ask the price. The total cost for this one piece of furniture, in my opinion was outrageous. The bed was a block shape, no hand cravings, or exquisite detailing. It did not come with mattresses, pillows, or decorative bedding. Just the bed frame cost a total of $9,686.42 after tax, and delivery.
Decorating an entire room in furniture, and home furnishings from Room and Board will easily run you $20,000 or more. Imagine decorating an entire home. Room and Board has stores in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York. There is also an outlet store in Minnesota, which is only open on the weekends, but offers huge discounts of scratch & dent, returns, and closeout furniture. You can also grab a few bargains on the clearance section of the Room and Board website, where you will find discounts up to 75% off. Shipping and handling is quite costly though. For their in home set up delivery option you can expect to pay anywhere from $69.99 to $199.99 depending on where you live. Small home accessories items can be shipped for $15.00, and large accessories for $25.00 through UPS. Large furniture pieces are shipped basic freight for $79.00 and up.
The one advantage you will find at Room and Board that some other furniture companies do not offer, is the ability to design your own furniture. You can pick out the type of wood, colors, sizes, style, and more, to create that "one of a kind" designer piece. For those whom have the financial means, Room and Board furniture is definitely an option worth considering. As for me personally I will settle for buying my furniture, and home accessories at a more reasonable price, even if it's guaranteed to only last a few years.

Post a CommentI am very disappointed with how Room and Board (Washington DC) handles deliveries. I gave specific instructions that they would need more than two people to haul the cabinet up the stairs, and although the supervisor aknowledged that he had made note of that, only two guys showed up and they didn't have a clue. This delivery is turning into a nightmare. I have yet to see whether the quality of the piece - if I ever receive it - is worth the price.
I have to agree with the other comments. I purchased a maple Queen bed, mattress, nightstand, and large dresser for about half that price. I can't find any single piece on their site for 9K.
I've purchased a number of large pieces from Room & Board, know their catalog well, and I can tell you, the author of this piece is misinformed. Prices are more in the range of Pottery Barn, West Elm, etc. My brand new (fabulous, large, custom, great quality) couch cost me $1600 including tax and delivery (including trash removal)...not cheap, but not by any means outrageous. No beds in the realm of $9000...more in the $1000-$2000 range, no beds even as high as $3000. And the quality/ durability of their products being so high, I actually find their stuff to be a bargain. Check your facts.
We recently visited the new store off of Howell Mill. The customer service was horrible. My husband and I had just return from Miami and decided check out this new store. We walked around on all three floors and no one offered assistance. The employees just stood around. We wondered what the history of the store was we wanted to know where did this chain come from. We were insulted, we had just purchased a new home closer to my husbands office and I must say we will not come back to a place where no one even says Hello.
I agree that the price seems skewed- my husband and I are middle income and have been able to easily afford Room & Board every time we need a new couch/chair. We live in South Dakota and they deliver everything to us for $200. I'm more than happy to pay for a $1500 couch that is stain resistant, stylish, and proven to hold up well (our oldest Room & Board couch is over five years old and looks like the day we purchased it, and that's with five dogs bouncing on it every day!).
Not to mention that their customer service is excellent. I'm a very satisfied customer.
I just want to make sure that your details are correct. The most expensive bed at Room & Board is $2699.00 check it out....My friends did their entire second home with Room & Board for 30K which included 3 bedroom!
Thanks for the link, though. I did see some lesser priced items. Also, if we ever win the lottery (:
Whew! I agree with you. Nine thousand dollars for a bed is ridiculous! Spending twenty thousand on a room for a major remodel....maybe but not for one bed. Way outside our budget.
