Rose Bowl Parade 2011 Kicks Off Day of Roses

Robert Dougherty
The Rose Bowl parade 2011 will start at 11 am est. Once the Rose Bowl parade 2011 begins, New Years Day will truly get under way. Although New Years Eve is symbolized by the ball drop at Times Square, New Years Day is often best symbolized in Pasadena. Parades and football games are the biggest events on New Years Day, but the action in Pasadena symbolizes both. The Rose Bowl parade 2011 is just the start, as it is the opening act for the game between Wisconsin and TCU hours later.

At 11 am est, 8 am Pacific, ABC and NBC will air the most famous New Years Day parade of all. The Mummers Parade in Philadelphia is the most famous parade on the East Coast, but the West Coast hosts an event with even more prestige.

Today, the Rose Bowl parade 2011 brings about the 122'nd annual edition of the famed celebration. Over 700,000 people are expected to crowd Pasadena, to see the floats and millions of flowers. This year, their theme is "Building Dreams, Friendships & Memories"

Countless memories have been formed by those who attend the parade year after year, or are just coming by for the first time. Although it may not have the extravagance of some of the Thanksgiving parades, it does bring a classy end to the holiday parade season.

Those who watch and attend the Rose Bowl parade 2011 will see Paula Dean lead as Grand Marshall. They will also be in the sun, after Southern California was drowned in rain for days. Workers and planners had to battle the elements all last month to get ready, but it is paying off with dry, partly cloudy conditions today.

After the floats, flowers and bands march down Pasadena, locals will either head into the Rose Bowl itself, or head home to watch it on TV. Last year's Granddaddy Of Them All was a mere prelude to the national championship game days later in Pasadena. But this year, the most prestigious game of all is the only one on the schedule in the area.

The day offers a major doubleheader regardless, as the Rose Bowl Parade 2011 is the prelude to a revealing battle between Wisconsin and TCU. The Badgers have been here a few times before, though not in the last decade. But TCU is a completely new face in Pasadena, as the unbeaten Horned Frogs hope to make a major statement for mid-majors.

Most everyone expects a major shootout between TCU and Wisconsin, starting at 4:30 pm est on ESPN. Yet at 11 am est on ABC and NBC, the Rose Bowl Parade will be the major show in town, as flowers and bands will hold just as much interest as football for a while.

Love the rose parade but don't bother watching NBC! Annoying, loud, inappropriate commentary... talked over the bands, quiet during the horses... worst year ever!

I attended the Rose Parade in person one year (the year they had the bride of Frankenstein) at it was absolutely beautiful but I prefer the watching from the comfort and warmth of my living room. For us locals or those who can get Channel 5 KTLA, the parade is an all day event because Channel 5 shows it live then shows it all day until 10 p.m. So if you’ve missed any part of it, you can see it again later. I’m so glad it finally stopped raining.

Correction, no one north of Trenton or south of Wilmington, DE has ever heard of the Mummers. Then most famous parade on New Years Day is and always will be the Rose Parade.
