Rose Petals

Tina Twito
A tin of petals
old as our love--
a scent that lingers,
real or not.

Soon now she will go.
And they will start a life
in the little house
they'll make a home.

If I could soften
the way they go,
I'd toss these petals
down at every step.

But I must wait here
half a world, a life, away
and watch what blooms
from what will someday
fade away.

I'll let the petals
flutter down on me,
till rosy sunsets,
climbing on,
vine up and mend
my broken heart.

(To my love, my daughter, and her love. Growing on...)
