Bottom of the 1st inning with two outs Jared Mitchell strolls to the plate and blasts a home run to put LSU in the lead 3-0. With a breeze blowing towards the outfield and the warm summer conditions have caused the Championship Series to be a hotbed of home runs.
In the bottom of the 3rd inning with bases loaded and LSU up 4-1 because of three straight walks. LSU's sophomore pitcher Anthony Ranuado walked yet another to make it 4-2 before getting out of the inning on a ground ball to shortstop. Struggling with his breaking ball, Ranuando found it again in the 4th to fool the Texas batters.
Kevin Keyes with a runner on and no outs in the bottom of the 5th hits a low ball from Ranuado out of the park in left center to tie it up at four all.
Texas starts the six inning walking Jared Mitchell who reaches second on an error by the catcher. Then Mikie Mahtook doubles to drive in Mitchell, who has world class speed, home to make it 5-4 LSU in the top of the six inning with no outs. Texas takes Brandon Workman out and Austin Dicharry takes over at reliever. Micah Gibbs bunts for LSU, to sacrifice Mahtook to third, is safe at first on an error by Dicharry. Derek Helinihi hits one to left field to score Mahtook on the sacrifice to make it 6-4. Then a wild pitch by Dicharry sends Gibbs to third. Austin Wood, the left handed Texas standout who pitched 13 innings of a 25 inning game last year, takes over with two out and two on, hits the first batter to make it bases loaded with Blake Dean the DH up to bat. Wood hits him and a runner walks in to make it 7-4. Next, Ochinko comes up big for LSU with a 2 run single. Now with the score 9-4 Jared Mitchell comes up for the second time this inning and line drives one to shortstop to stop the Texas bleeding.
Anthony Ranuado gets the first batter out for LSU with a fly to center then is taken out to a standing ovation. Left hander Chad Jones, a starting defensive back in football nicknamed the "Dreadlocks of Doom", takes over for starter Ranuado. He precedes to strikeout the next two batters to retire the side with a 90 plus mile per hour fastball and a wicked breaking ball. You can feel the momentum switch as LSU sprints to the dugout with a five run lead on a very warm June evening. It doesn't hurt that LSU is 46-0 if winning after six innings.
Texas comes out in the 7th inning and gets three up and three down in a hurry as they gear up for a run at LSU. LSU pitcher Jones gets the Texas catcher Cameron Rupp out with a fly ball to center. But Jones then hits Kevin Keyes who has been cramping up in left field in the heel. Jones then gets the next batter to pop out to first and gets Preston Clark out with a 3-1 fly ball to left, killing any thoughts about a rally while Jones was on the mound.
Going into the 8th inning LSU freshman Austin Nola starts it off with a double to cramping right fielder Kevin Keyes. Then with no one out DJ LeMahieu hits one off Austin Wood's knee to reach 1st safely and advance Nola to third. Texas takes Wood out and brings Keith Shinaberry, a top student /athlete, in relief of Wood who limps off to a nice round of applause. Throwing submarine style Shinaberry allows a long out to center that scores Nola. But with one out the next batter hits into a double play to allow Texas to hold at 10-4.
Louis Coleman a LSU senior takes over for Jones in the bottom of the 8th. Coleman starts by striking out Brandon Loy then allows Michael Torres to double with a long ball to right center. Tucker then grounds out to short followed by a grounder to first to end the 8th and stranding a runner on second.
Shinaberry starts the 9th facing Ocinko the LSU first baseman who crushes one out and is named the Player of the Game. 11-4 Texas is looking for a miracle. They get a small one when Jared Mitchell grounds out for out number one. With Mikie Mahtook coming out Texas switches to Chance Ruffin, a hard throwing right hander, to get the final two outs at the top of the 9th. He gets Mahtook out but Gibbs singles to right. Ruffin bears down to strike out Helinihi and Texas heads into the bottom of the 9th three outs away from defeat. Does Texas have any gas in the tank to overcome the 7 run lead by LSU?
Coleman walks the first Texas batter, but then strikes out Cameron Rupp the Texas catcher for out number one. Kevin Keyes comes up and still cramping strikes out for out number two. Then with the crowd shouting L-S-U Coleman strikes out the last Texas batter and LSU wins the 2009 National Championship against a great University of Texas team.
