Rovos Rail Luxury Trains

Jessica Rowe
Rovos Rail was established in 7989 by Mr. Rohan Vos. He wanted to take his family on a safari around Southern Africa, in a luxurious train.

Old railway carriages were purchased and remodeled to Mr. Vos specifications. Mr. Vos was unhappy with the fees the railway authorities wanted for Mr. Vos to use the track. They suggested that he sell tickets and more than two decades later, Mr. Vos claims to have the best train set in the world.

Each of the carriages had been rebuilt, installing real beds, air conditioning, showers, toilets and under floor heating. Mr. Vos has around four of his trains out at any given time. They have often been referred to as hotels on wheels.

The trains carry up to 72 passengers in 36 suites, offering modern comfort and convenience.

The air conditioned suites with wood paneling and Edwardian features, accommodate two people with twin or double beds. Each suit has a personal safe, writing area, bar fridge full of beverages picked by the passengers and 24 hour room service.

Each en suit bathroom comes with modern technology of hot showers and shaver and hair dryer plugs.

There are three suite types available, the Royal Suite, Deluxe Suit and the Pullman Suite.

The Royal Suites are 172 square feet and take up half a carriage. They are elegant and roomy with there own private lounge and a full bathroom with a shower and separate Victorian bath.

The Deluxe Suites are 118 square feet with the option of either twin or double beds. There is a lounge area, as well as an en suite bathroom with shower.

The Pullman Suites are 76 square feet and have the same bathroom as the Deluxe Suites. Since the bedroom is smalled, there is an option of bunk beds or a double bed which can be turned into a couch during the day.

Travelers are on board the train for several days at a time and a selection of food is required. A team of chefs have the task of meeting the guests needs. Much planning and preparation are put into creating the menu.

Every morning there is a full breakfast made to order, or a breakfast buffet with cold meats, fresh fruit, croissants, yogurt and cereal. Lunch and dinner include an appetizer followed by a choice of meat, fish or vegetarian dishes. Dessert is next and a selection of South African wines.

Each train has 42 seat dining cars, a 32 seat Observation car at the rear of the train with enlarged windows and open air balconies. At the center of the train there is a 26 seat non-smoking Lounge car, which also has a gift shop.

There are no television sets or radios on board the trains.

The soul of Rovos Rail is made up of five remodeled locomotives. The oldest and smallest engine is 439 TIFFANY, named after Rohan and Anthea Vos's youngest daughter. Locomotives 2701 BRENDA, 2702 Bianca and 3360 SHAUN, are named after their other three children. 3484 MARJORIE, is names after Rohan's mother and locomotive 3442 ANTHEA, is named after his wife.
