Roy Halladay's Perfect Game

Roy's Special Day and One Step Closer to Cooperstown

Mike Spain
Yes Saturday was a special day for Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay. Roy did what he needed to do to have the Philadelphia Phillies defeat the Florida Marlins 1-0. Roy Halladay pitched a perfect game no hitter reported by Fox Sports.

Special Gem

According to MLB.com "Phillies right-hander Roy Halladay retired all 27 batters he faced to pitch the 20th perfect game in Major League history on Saturday night at Sun Life Stadium." Roy accomplished something which had only been accomplished 19 other times in the leagues history which makes his gem historic and special. "This was the Phillies' second perfect game" and the first since "Jim Bunning in 1964." The pitching gem is even more special because it is the first time this has happened in the franchise in 46 years.

Pitching Thin?

Over 15 years ago expansion was to hurt pitching. Douglas Dinsmoor pointed out in September 1993 "Hasn't every GM been whining for years that there isn't nearly enough pitching to go around? Please 'splain it to me: How does adding another 20 pitching jobs address the dearth of hurlers?" Two perfect games pitched this season, one by Halladay and "unheralded Dallas Braden doing it for Oakland against Tampa Bay on May 9."It is also the third no hitter of the season as Ubaldo Jimenez threw one in April. These pitching gems are throwing serious holes in those 1990s baseball theories.

Approaching Hall of Fame Numbers

Roy Halladay's perfect game definitely helps his Hall of Fame Resume. Especially, when one couples the perfect game with his 2003 Cy Young Award and Roy being a six time All-Star. Roy is not a shoe in for the Hall of Fame. He will need to continue to pitch at a high level for several more years. The 33 year old pitcher currently has a career 155-70 record. Roy also has had two twenty win seasons in his career. Halladay is a long way from the hall of fame; however he is building a solid case for membership. (Stats from MLB.com)

I haven't seen too many, but watching a pitcher throw a perfect game is just awesome.

Mike, this doesn't happen very often. I read a book on Don Larson's perfect game many years ago. It takes a little luck, good defense and great pitching. Sounds like he got all three. Great reporting.
