Roy Jones vs Danny Green was supposed to be a tune up fight for Roy Jones Jr. The former champ was reduced to fighting Danny Green in Australia, but it should have been a stepping stone towards one more big fight. However, the Roy Jones Jr-Danny Green instead became Jones' biggest disaster yet. It only took one round for Jones to get humiliated, in what may be the last act of his once-great career.
Roy Jones Jr fought Danny Green for the IBO world cruiserweight title, which would have been the ninth title of his career. In the past, he fought for the middleweight and heavyweight crowns, but at 40 years old, after a few bad losses, he had to start smaller.
But Danny Green was fighting in front of a home crowd in Australia, and never let Jones get close. It took one minute for Jones Jr to get knocked down, only to face a barrage of hits after he got up. Green was likely on the verge of knocking Jones out, until the referee stopped the fight after 122 seconds.
The news quickly made the rounds to America, stunning Roy Jones Jr's fans and followers. In his glory days, he was the one that knocked challengers out after a few minutes, but those days are gone. If boxing fans didn't know it before the Roy Jones-Danny Green fight, they know it now.
Aside from giving Jones the worst loss of his career, Green also altered the immediate future for boxing super fights. Jones had been planning to fight Bernard Hopkins, in a matchup of legendary former champions, on March 13. But after last night, it doesn't sound like such a big clash anymore.
As such, the Jones-Hopkins fight can be moved to a later date, to make room for the biggest fight in years. Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr finally seem set to agree to a superfight, and if negotiations go well, they could take the March 13 date instead of Jones and Hopkins.
Once upon a time, Roy Jones Jr was at the center of superfight hype. Now he can do no better than being Danny Green's punching bag in Australia, as the Pacquiaos and the Mayweathers take his former throne.

Post a CommentI think Roy should have considered retirement after getting knocked out by Antonio Tarver. Roy in my books could easily still be a future hall of famer - but he seems to only stay in boxing now just to chase glory days and the purse that are long behind him. After this loss, I hope Roy seriously considers retiring for the sake of his health in the future.
Wow, so sad. I remember when Roy Jones was force to be reckoned with. Are his best days behind him?
