Roy Jones Jr. Wins Over Omar Sheika at March Badness

Roy Jones Jr. has not had the best luck in the boxing ring lately. Roy Jones Jr. was the most feared man in boxing, until several losses dropped him back down to Earth. Now Roy Jones Jr. is just another 40-year-old boxer, no longer a threat for any major boxing championships, like anyone else. So Jones Jr. has to take victories wherever he can, and he took one during an event that combined boxing fights with mixed martial arts. "March Badness" was promoted by Jones Jr. in Pensacola, Florida, as boxing and MMA action came together.

The March Badness main event had Roy Jones Jr. up against Omar Sheika. Jones Jr. regularly beat up against the lightly regarded, unknown Omar Sheikas' of the world in between major fights with headline competition. Jones returned to form with a 5'th round TKO in home of his hometown fans at March Badness.

Jones had not won a championship in two years, and had last fought in an ugly loss to undefeated Joe Calzaghe four months ago. In his comeback, Jones was not fighting for any of the major world titles in the major divisions, but rather for something called the North American Boxing Association light heavyweight title.

Jones took this title by pounding Sheika in the fifth round, leaving his face bloody. Sheika did not go down himself, but the referee stopped the fight anyway. Jones claimed victory at March Badness in his home town of Pensacola, which he last fought in 10 years ago.

This victory was the culmination of Jones Jr's March Badness event, which he promoted through his company, Square Ring Promotions. Before the Jones Jr-Sheika fight, several mixed martial arts and boxing bouts were held, though most fans came for the Jones bout.

For MMA fans, March Badness was headlined by a controversial win for Jeff Monson over Roy Nelson. Monson narrowly won on the scorecards, though many thought the fight belonged to Nelson. In addition, Bobby Lashley picked up a unanimous decision over Jason Guida.

In the boxing portion of March Badness, undefeated B.J. Flores won his own NABO title by winning the junior heavyweight crown over Jose Luis Herrera in a unanimous decision.

For Jones Jr., he improved to 53-5 with his 39'th knockout.
