Roy Scheider- Now Gone Two Years and Sorely Missed

Roy Passed Away on the 10th of February, 2008

The tenth of February in 2010 will mark the second anniversary of the death of Roy Scheider. While the following statement isn't a particularly amazing fact, 2010 was also the name of one of Roy Scheider's movies. 2010, a daring and ambitious sequel to the remarkable 2001: A Space Odyssey, was a good choice for a man who played characters who didn't begin as anything particular, but became remarkable by the end of the story. This is how it was with Roy Scheider, who didn't begin his career with some amazing blockbuster breakthrough, but developed it through hard work and determination, and knowing that he'd succeed through perseverance. His character in that movie, Dr. Heywood Floyd, had a goal and a mission, which was to trek into the unknown and always with the potential for failure in order to unravel an incredible mystery. But in the end of the movie 2010, not only were mysteries unraveled, but others were encountered, and a star was born.

So it went with Roy Scheider's career. He began humbly enough, but knew what he wanted and was pretty sure he knew how to get there. This career met with enough mystery and incredible potential for failure, but through sheer guts and determination Roy Scheider saw the mystery of his career unravel, and he became a star. Sure, he's had his ups and downs in his career, even after the incredibly successful and record-breaking movie, Jaws, but he maintained as that heroic everyman all the way to the end. Thus, his final role in the upcoming movie, Iron Cross, will premiere without him being with us.

While Scheider was known to play a heroic everyman, another guy among the rank and file who stepped forward to achieve greatness, his career certainly enjoyed amazing highlights, such as two Academy Award nominations. His acting career also spanned through numerous sorts of roles, from cops to criminals, from fearless leader to troubled quirk, from movies to the small screen, and also in sports. For those who didn't know, that nose was provided via a relatively short but somewhat successful boxing endeavor as a young man.

Even a breezy scan through Roy Scheider's filmography easily proves impressive, demonstrating that Roy persevered in his acting career since the mid-sixties. But, like everything and everyone, age and mortality made their mark on Roy's life, too, and he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2004. He endured a bone marrow transplant in 2005 and continued struggling with the disease until his death.

The shining star of Roy Scheider will continue to shine long beyond his mortal self, and his name and numerous characters will live for as long as humanity has an interest in the art of movies.
