Royal Oak City Commission sends resolution advocating gun-free public buildings
Neighborhood: Royal Oak
Royal Oak, MI 48067
United States of America
Most in metro Detroit have heard about the arguments that went on between the Royal Oak City Commission and advocates of gun rights. Ultimately, the Commission removed a provision in the Arts, Beats and Eats contract forbidding firearms within the festival's perimeters. Now, the Commission has taken up a resolution to make public buildings in Royal Oak gun-free zones.

Under current Michigan law, local governments may not enact laws that preclude guns from public buildings. The Commission's resolution asks legislatures in Lansing to modify the law to grant local governments the power to enact an ordinance to make their own public buildings gun-free zones. The resolution was sent to Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm; State Sen. Jahn Pappageorge; State Rep. Marie Donigan; and every city, township and village in Oakland County.
