Royal Oak considers increase in parking fees
Neighborhood: Royal Oak
Royal Oak, MI 48067
United States of America
The Royal Oak Downtown Development Authority is taking a look at the city's proposal to increase the rates paid at parking meters by 100 percent during the day and by 33 percent in the evenings. The rates are currently 50 cents per hour during the day and 75 cents per hour in the evenings. The meters currently bring in about $3.4 million per year. Those who receive tickets and pay them contribute another $700,000 each year.

Much of the reason for the proposed change is the city's budget. For this budget year, there is a $179 million decrease in expected revenue from property taxes as compared to last year. The City Commission has already extended the hours during which the parking meters are enforced and has increased the cost of parking in the city's parking structures.
