As of July 2009, Royal Oak had the healthy population statistic of 57,188, an increase of 4.8 percent since 2000. Females - er - outweigh the males 51.2 percent to 48.8 percent. The daytime population change due to commuting is a loss of 3,332 (-5.5 percent); gains include workers who live and work in the city at 6,275 or (18 percent).

Comprised of 11.8 square miles, Royal Oak has a density of 4,840 people per square mile, and those miles are situated at 670 feet of elevation.

The area's historical tornado activity is above Michigan's state average and is 90 percent greater than the overall U.S. average. RO is also the birthplace of the NFL 's Brady Smith and Nick Luchey, as well as PGA player Michael Harris.

Cemeteries include Oakview and Royal Oak, and a reigning attraction is the Detroit Zoo - always a curiosity to outsiders who don't get why the Detroit Zoo is not, in fact, IN Detroit.
