During her retirement from her teaching career, Helen Williams demonstrated the value of ROOTS '" Royal Oak Opportunity To Serve.

"From acorns grow mighty oaks," is the slogan, and Helen Williams planted two acorns through ROOTS. In her will upon passing away, she donated $105,846 for the municipal bus system, on which she often rode. She contributed an equal sum for one of her favorite civic institutions, the Royal Oak Library.

Other sources that ROOTS donations have supported in Royal Oak include the Animal Shelter, the Farmers Market, the Nature Society, the Recreation Department, and the community's pair of senior citizens centers, Mahany/Meininger and Salter.

For any Royal Oak resident who wishes to get involved, the ROOTS Board of Directors conducts public meetings on the fourth Thursday of every month. The next session is at 7 p.m. on Oct. 28 at the Mahany/Meininger Senior Citizens Center, 27400 Marias Ave.
