Patrick M. Mulligan, Royal Oak's new fire chief, works to serve all of the community's citizens, but a dozen special people are on his mind '" his wife, Cindy, and their 11 children.

Mulligan is the 14th fire chief in Royal Oak's 179-year history. He replaces Wil White, who has retired.

Muligan is a 25-year veteran of the Fire Department who previously served as assistant chief, lieutenant and sergeant, but the job wasn't just handed to him. He passed a four-month trial period before City Manager Donald E. Johnson made and appointment permanent.

"These are challenging times," Mulligan said. "My biggest challenge will be maintaining the current quality of service given the present economic situation. I'm excited to have the opportunity and thankful to be put into the position at this time."
