The Royals have struggled out of the gate this season with a 12-23 record. The bullpen has been a problem all season long as they have blown eight saves opportunities already this season, including two by closer Joakim Soria. Reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke picked up his first win in eight starts on Thursday, but that wasn't enough to save Hillman's job.
The Royals have named Ned Yost to take over as manager. Yost managed the Milwuakee Brewers for nearly six seasons, before being dismissed by the team in September of 2008. He has a career managerial record of 457-502. Yost was brought in as a special adviser to baseball operations by the Royals in January of this year.
Yost will take over a team that has the third worst earned run average in all of baseball and is tied with the fewest wins. The Royals are also the second worst defensive team in the American League, ahead of only the Detroit Tigers. Yost takes over as the Royals are 10 1/2 games behind the first place Minnesota Twins.
Hillman leaves the Royals with a 152- 207 record. Under his leadership the Royals finished no better than fourth place in the American League Central.

Post a CommentI think the Royals need to do more than fire their manager. However, they have the talent, they just can never get it together. They do need a little more pitching work. Sometimes a new manager is the answer sometimes not. They are in my team's division so we will see. Great article Darren!
