RPG Gaming: A Brief Overview

Kevin Choy
RPG gaming has become more and more popular as the world outside of our own doors becomes too real to bear. (RPG stands for role playing game for the uninitiated.) In the world of a role-playing game you can take on the persona of a warlord, a vampire, an elf or anything else you can imagine. There is RPG gaming that features teenagers and young adults that allow the shy or the unpopular to take on the life of the prom queen or the football star. There is even a game that will allow you to rise through the ranks of a virtual corporation and fire your boss.

A good system is a definite requirement for RPG gaming. Look for a system that is rated for gaming with a good monitor and integrated speakers for excellent sound. Make sure that your connection will be fast enough for solid gaming, you do not want to mess with dial up for most gaming situations.

Before beginning any RPG, you must understand that you are merely role-playing, and that nothing that happens in your fantasy world is real. If there is any chance at all of you mixing up the two, then steer clear of role-playing. Although many people will take things too far, some people become so immersed in the role that they will cease to function as themselves any longer. Do not let that happen to you.

One of the best but darkest games available is Vampire Clans that war amongst each other while seeking out new skills, new capabilities and new weapons. You also must collect minions to do your bidding, while taking part in battles to kill off your enemies. The entire game is set in darkness, and is appropriately creepy with ominous music and shadows.

On the other side of the emotional spectrum is a game where you take on the persona of a young adult and wander through the virtual world doing many of the things that regular people would do- including seeking a job, going on dates and even going out to eat. All of the mundane parts of life are included for realism, and the graphics are fairly bright and lifelike.

No matter what type of game you choose to play, no matter what persona you slip into, do not let it take over your life- your real life is still waiting to be lived as well.
