Rudy Giuliani and the Bernie Kerik Factor

Jack Oceano
Aside from running for President, what has Rudy Giuliani done on the national stage?

Well, he recommended his close friend Bernie Kerik for the position of Homeland Security Secretary in late 2004.

That's right, Rudy Giuliani, the man who says he is the best candidate to protect us from future terror attacks, recommended the man currently indicted on federal corruption charges to head up our agency for homeland defense. (George W. Bush, of course, accepted this recommendation, but Kerik was forced to withdraw his nomination due to another scandal).

Bernie Kerik, who counts Rudy Giuliani not only as his friend but his mentor, is also the subject of a lawsuit brought by book publisher Judith Regan against the News Corporation (owner of Fox News) for encouraging Regan to mislead federal investigators about her sexual relationship with Kerik during his bid to become the Homeland Security Secretary.

News Corp. allegedly did so in order to protect Rudy Giuliani's presidential campaign. (Regan and Kerik reportedly used an apartment near Ground Zero, that was supposed be used by exhausted 9/11 rescue workers, for their sexual affair).

Rudy Giuliani, who is arguably the least qualified presidential candidate seeking the Republican nomination, has admitted that recommending Bernie Kerik for the position of Homeland Security Secretary was a mistake. After all, how could he not? But this was more than just poor judgment. Rudy Giuliani and Bernie Kerik were, by all accounts, close. Real close.

Is this what America can expect from a Giuliani-run administration? More cronieism and scandal? Considering that Rudy Giuliani is running largely on the issue of 9/11 and homeland defense, the answer must be a resounding yes.

The question is whether the Bernie Kerik factor will come into play in Giuliani's bid for the Republican nomination. Because it will most certainly come into play during the general election, if Rudy Giuliani somehow finds himself on the Republican ticket.

No, Brett, I was explaining where you can find other info, because I assumed you were legitimately looking for it. There was no tone intended. I listed my main source; but you can find coverage of the litigation just about anywhere.

I'm not saying that there are no sources, i'm just saying you have to make it so that readers can access that information easily. Are you sore about the other debate or something?

  • Jack Oceano11/16/2007

I'm not sure how much Fox News is covering this (because they're involved in the litigation), but you can find info on it from every other major news source. And it was front-page news in every major New York paper.

I don't like Giulianni any more than you do, I was only saying that you are making some very big claims and you need to back them up.

  • Jack Oceano11/16/2007

I'm not making the claims, Brett. There is pending litigation. I am, however, quite surprised that you would want to defend Rudy. He's pro-choice, supports gay rights, and overall, very socially liberal. He's had three marriages, committed adultery. I'm surprised you like him.

If you are going to make claims as ridiculous as that you are going to need many many sources, msnbc is not nearly enough!!

Thanks for reminding me why political news disheartens me!

Late 2004 is ancient history, Anne? You're more than welcome to write articles on Bill and Monica, if you think that's an important issue in the upcoming election. I happen to think Giuliani's selection of a man now indicted on felony corruption charges to be Homeland Security secretary more vital, but that's just my humble opinion.

  • Anne Bryant11/15/2007

Hey Jack, since were doing ancient history here, how about an article on "The Bill and Monica Factor" or "The Hillary and Travelgate Factor". Or how about "the Hillary and Norman HSU Factor" I know you would ALWAYS strive to be fair.
