Rudy reviewed our history of conflict against the terrorists, and contrasted that with the experience of the Cold War. "During the Cold War, as grave as that threat was, we never once experienced a direct attack on our homeland." He criticized Democrats for trying to force a surrender in the Iraq war by choosing an exit date. "I cannot ever remember a time in history when a great power gave a date for surrender to their enemies when they have never lost a single skirmish." Rudy also drew a line in the sand against judicial activism, by criticizing the extreme decisions of the 9th Circuit Court in California. He presented his remarks in a warm and polite tone, with a touch of mild humor here and there. Such as asking the rhetorical question, "when have any of your neighbors expressed a desire to go to England to take advantage of their great hospitals?"
The impressive list of endorsers included Congressman Bill Young, Congresswoman Ginny Browne-Waite, State Senator Mike Fasano, the Pinellas County Sheriff, the Pinellas County Party Chairman, and the mayors of several small municipalities. The surprise of the afternoon was the introduction given to Rudy by Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum, who also announced his position as Florida Rudy Campaign Chairman.
The location of the event, St. Pete High, had the significance of being the Alma Mater of Charlie Crist, Florida's new governor. The audience had the air of New York accents, and many references the New York Yankees, and Rudy's record against terrorism and crime in New York. The significance of choosing Pinellas County, the start of the Crist Campaign, cannot be overlooked. The presence of many early supporters of Charlie Crist may well be a leading indicator of more endorsements to come.
A victory for Rudy in the Florida Republican Primary will have national significance, because the leadership of the party is committed to moving up the date of the presidential primary to occur before New Hampshire, the traditional first presidential primary.
