In case you plan to gift your boss something on his/her birthday, there are some basic rules that you have to follow. It is never a good idea to gift something that will portray the wrong impression or something that may be inappropriate.
There are a number of sentiments attached to gifts and although you might have a noble thought, it may sometimes affect your relationship with your boss. There are a number of organizations that don't really have the practice of gifting something to their boss on his/her birthday. Although this is not compulsory, it is better to know a couple of things about gift etiquette just in case you wish to give a gift.
First of all, check to see what your co-workers plan to do and then go with the flow. It is best to refrain from giving any gift to your boss if no one else at work has something planned. If you do give a gift when no one else is, your peers may interpret it the wrongly. However, if you feel compelled to give your boss a gift, then maintain discretion and leave it on his/her table either early in the morning or sometime before leaving the office.
Think of a simple gift that is not very expensive and ensure that it is not too personal. Refrain from flowers, jewelry, lingerie, or cash gifts. Also avoid gifts that have some political message or any sort of racial discrimination.
Instead, think of a gift such as a nice pen. Every boss needs a pen and that is something that will be appreciated. This is practical gift as the boss is sure to use it every day. A business card case is yet another meaningful gift as it will help in keeping the desk free of clutter. There are other items such as pen stands, desk clock, calendars, paper weights and a whole lot of items that you may choose from.
