Rumors Circulate (Again) that Sex and the City Will Come to the Big Screen

A Sex-y New Movie?

Women everywhere were left bereft when HBO's runaway hit Sex & the City called it quits after six successful seasons. Though writers did their best to neatly wrap up and dangling storylines (everything was finally resolved for our four favorite friends), fans still wanted more. Throughout the final sixth season, rumors flew hot and heavy that the four leading ladies would reunite to make the Sex & the City movie.

Then, talks were stopped. One cast member, Kim Cattrall, did not want to do the project. And, really, what's Sex without Samantha? Movie plans were put to a halt, negotiations ended, and bitter blood brewed between the four Sex-y ladies, according to Hollywood rumor and speculation. And that seemed to be the end of the Sex-y new movie.

Until early November, 2006. Then, the rumors re-surfaced. According to insiders, they have "made significant progress" in negotiations with the four actresses. There will be no Sex & the City movie unless all four - that means Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw), Kristin Davis (Charlotte York-Goldenblatt), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbs-Brady), and Kim Cattrall (the one and only Samantha Jones) - leading women are involved. And there's been no word yet from any of the star's reps.

There is also no word as to whether our favorite leading men will return from the cast to appear on the big screen - like Chris Noth (Mr. Big). Right now, it's all producers can do to get the four actresses to agree on their contracts. It was contractual disputes that killed Sex & the City after six seasons, and the same old problems could always rise up again and prevent the Sex-y movie that fans are screaming for.

But if the Sex & the City movie did make it to the big screen, it would be a huge hit. And everyone involved with the negotiations knows it, too. DVD sales have been phenomenal, and the show is highly popular even in cable and network syndication. The four leading ladies haven't made a huge splash in Hollywood since, and it's hard to imagine that any of them could come up with an excuse not to do the movie.

Fingers crossed, fans will wait and see. There's no doubt that everyone involved in the show's creation, and the huge network of fans, are dying for a Sex & the City movie. Another chapter in the adventures of the four women that every woman identifies with is just what fans have been waiting for. But there are at least four women - Sarah, Kim, Kristin, and Cynthia - who may not be so eager to reunite for another circuit around the New York City streets.

If the negotiations go smoothly and contracts are worked out, the upcoming movie plans will be banner news. If not, the Sex-y movie will go back into the rumor mill, waiting to be born again.
