Rumors of Kristin Davis Sex Tape, Pictures Raise Questions

A video has made its viral debut on the internet: Yet another sex tape that claims to star a celebrity. Some rumors say Kristin Davis, of Sex and the City, is the leading lady of this clip. Her rep has already denied that it is her in the tape, but viewers say the brunette in the video resembles her.

It's already being theorized that this sex tape was released to stir interest in the upcoming Sex and the City movie, and why not use this ploy? It shot Paris Hilton to relative infamy within a week, and it could possibly have the same effect for the movie of a television show that has flagging popularity as its reruns are edited down to viewer-friendly cable channels.

A sex tape being released, if cleverly done, won't even be more revealing than some scenes you can see on television, especially premium channels like HBO, Cinemax, or Showtime. They are often blurry and hard to make out. I don't believe it's damaging to the career of anyone in Hollywood to have one of these videos released; Americans seem to love a good sex scandal. Due to the rate a video becomes viral then spreads through YouTube, MySpace, and countless other websites, a scandalous tape can bolster a celebrity's movie revenue by plastering his or her name all over the news. While a star might not be able to officially release something without being accused of participating in pornography, a video that is leaked onto the internet, intentional or not, is still pornography. Stars should be careful, especially knowing that anyone they make a video like this with might spread it around - or even sell it - for a slice of the fame they have.

For someone who depends on respectability in their career, like a politician for example, a sex scandal isn't a possibly positive thing. Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer recently resigned due to a scandal involving call girls paid with the state's dime. During the Lewinsky scandal, Bill Clinton was impeached but acquitted of charges. Having a sex scandal come out during a political career generally spells the end of the career, not to mention the personal embarrassment and the problems that they cause in families.

An everyday person might lose their job or significant other over a sex tape being released, but it would not become nationally known like one involving a TV or movie star might be. Some people film their private lives with the intent to keep it private, but sometimes things happen that make it otherwise. I would say that if you're not all right with other people seeing something, don't commit it to film, especially in the digital age. Even if someone trusts their partner, sometimes breakups are harsh, and people are petty. It's never a sure thing that a private video will stay private.
