Rump.a.rooz Pocket Diapers, a Review

Cute Diapers Made by a WAHM

Kari Smith
Cloth is back and better then ever. No longer are parents dealing with folding diapers and using pins as your grandma once did. Cloth diapers today come in many different styles to choose from, some are even as easy or easier to use then disposables. Cloth diapering has become the latest fad for many parents and even has become addicting. With many different companies out there now making the journey into cloth diapering the choices of who to buy from is over whelming.

Rump.a.rooz are made right here in the USA by a group of extremely talented women who sew in the comfort and convenience of their own homes. (Rump.a.rooz). Rump.a.rooz are a pocket style diaper and fit almost every size of child out there.

Each diaper is made by hand and is not made by a large company on a conveyer belt. When you place an order with Rump.a.rooz you buy knowing that your diaper will be hand-made with the highest quality materials and that each stitch will be sewn with love. The mother behind Rump.a.rooz puts a lot of work into her diapers and backs her design 100%.

Rump.a.rooz has solved that "wet line" problem. Every cloth diaper out there seems to leave a wet line on your baby's clothing from the rolled out fleece in the elasticized leg. This WILL NOT happen with Rump.a.rooz because they have taken the extra steps to add a waterproof/breathable panel that wont allow moisture from the insert to come in contact with the leg casing AT ALL and there is also a waterproof liner inside the inner gusset. (Rump.a.rooz) Great for parents who are fed up with those dreaded wet-lines and having to change their children's clothing throughout the day because their other diapers have created small leaks around the legs.

Price: @ $17.50-$20.50. These diapers come a little more on the pricey side, yet a lot of parents say they are worth every extra penny. They come in various adorable prints and sizes. An added plus is that the one size diaper is the same exact price as other sizes such as small, medium and large.

Resale Value: Resale value on Rump.a.rooz brand diapers is great. Rump.a.rooz are now in high demand and since they are made by hand and not in a factory there is a long waiting list of parents waiting to buy one of these diapers. Most Rump.a.rooz will sell for very close to the price you paid for it. There are even a few parents out there that are willing to pay even a few dollars over the going rate to try out one of these diapers.

Laundering: After removing the dirty diaper from your baby, shake any solids off into the toilet. The fleece inners are great for releasing anything fairly solid, although you may need to lightly scrap off any unsoiled bowel movements. Next reach your hand into the pocket of the diaper and remove the insert. Then rinse any solids remaining on the diaper in a sink or using your diaper sprayer.

Store dirty diapers in a dry pail. On washday run the diapers through a cold rinse to remove any solids that may remain on the diaper and to rinse out most of the urine. Some people opt. to do yet another cold cycle. Next, use liquid detergent, and only 1/2 to 1/4 the recommended amount. This is all that is necessary for a thorough cleaning. Amount of detergent used also depends on what type of water you have (hard or soft) and the diapers you are using. Amounts needed are generally one to a couple of tablespoons. What is important to remember is that less is more. You can always add soap to a load if you find that your diapers are not coming clean but getting extra suds out is a lot harder to fix. The detergent you use should be as plain as possible. Those containing fragrances, enzymes, fabric softeners, bleach or other whiteners are not recommended. These can weaken your diapers, cause them to repel, coat them resulting in repelling and easily build-up which leads to diaper rashes and stink issues. Some good detergents are: Charlie's Soap, Allen's Soap, and Tide Free. An extra rinse is helpful in getting some extra soap out. Small amounts of vinegar and/or baking soda may be useful if you are having issues with urine smelling diapers or they aren't getting clean enough.

Hang your clean Rump.a.rooz out to dry, or tumble-dry on low. If you have chosen a flannel print Rump.a.rooz hanging your diapers out to dry instead of using the dryer will help them stay looking newer longer and help prevent piling of the outer print of the flannel.

Things NOT to do to your diaper: Like most other brands of diapers, don't use any bleach products. Bleach is a strong chemical and will break down the fibers in the diapers. Bleach may also rot the elastic in your diapers, causing it to snap and break.

Bleach may also cause rashes on children's tender skin and leave unwanted bleach stains on clothing washed with your diapers.

If your diapers are full of stains there are many other safe ways to remove them. For example hang or lay your diapers in the sun, it works wonders! Sunning your diapers may lighten your stains to the point of barely seeing them or even better removing your light stains all together.

For a better and more quicker stain remover put a few drops of lemon juice on the stains and then sun them. Or for a quick stain fix, a drop or two of hydrogen peroxide is a safe and easy stain remover. Beware thought, hydrogen peroxide may cause some yellowing on certain fabrics so also use a little drop as a test before pour large amounts unto clothing or diapers.

Don't use fabric softener. It will coat diapers making them water repellent and will cause leaks! Also beware that if you use dryer sheets in your dryer for other laundry this can coat your dryer and transfer to your diapers. Then you have the issue with stripping your diapers till they are free of the coat of softeners which can be a pain and takes hours.

Ease of Use: Rump.a.rooz are extremely easy to use. Simply stuff the pocket with your favorite insert or the insert that comes with the diaper. Next place the diaper under your child and pull the side tabs tight and fasten with the Velcro on the tabs. The Velcro on the tabs is very strong and will not come loose in extended us.

Absorbency: Rump.a.rooz like other pocket diapers may be stuffed to meet your child's own personal absorbency needs. Parents can add one insert for light wetting children or a lot of inserts and protection for their little mean green pee machines. Rump.a.rooz are the only diaper brand that comes with a waterproof/breathable panel that won't allow moisture from the insert to come in contact with the leg casing and also each unlike other brands Rump.a.rooz all come with a waterproof liner inside the inner gusset to help prevent the horrid "wet line" problem caused by so many other brands of cloth diapers. (Rump.a.rooz)

Special uses: Rump.a.rooz pockets may be used as a light weight cover for trim fitted diapers or pre-folds as well.

Comfort: The tabs on the diaper are stretchy so you can get a perfect fit on your child. The inner is soft fleece and very soft on your child's behind. The diapers are also not stiff like some other brands. The inner water-proof shield is not PUL material like most other types of pocket diapers, yet the water-proof barrier is made of a light-weight more breathable material. (Rump.a.rooz) More air flows through this brand of diaper allowing for your child's behind to breath. With the various sizes including the one size diaper you can always get a perfect fit for almost any type of child.

Cuteness factor: Rump.a.rooz are simply adorable. They come in solids, prints, and even fancy furry fabric. Some of the diapers are even cute for wearing alone or under jumpers. My little guy even wears his alone with a basic tee shirt. The mother behind Rump.a.rooz will even let you mail in your own fabric to be turned into a diaper! Also new fabrics and styles are always coming out.

My Favorite Features:

The waterproof liner has to be one of my favorite features. Initially this took some getting used to. This is the one of the only diapers that I have found that has a true waterproof & breathable liners. Made of Ultrix this liner has a very unique feature - because it is breathable, it tends to feel humid when wet...NOT WET (which is what took some getting used to because at first I thought it was wicking.)

The humid feeling will not dampen clothing nor is it wet itself - it is WATERPROOF which is amazing and my husband calls it the ""Changer Indicator"". It truly is a daddy and day care proof diaper. Until this diaper my husband would always leave our baby in his wet diaper way too long cause he didn't know when to change him. It is also great for nighttime diapering. The waterproof barrier holds up well to even 12 hours of extended wear on my little pee machine.

Yet another of my favorite features is the workmanship of these diapers. The stitching is nearly perfect and they are fluffy, luxurious diapers. I bought my first two Rump.a.rooz gently used and even then they came to me fluffy and soft and like new.

I also love Rump.a.rooz also double (or inner) gussets. They have been proven to be 100% leak proof on even the nastiest icky tummy or BF poop. My son has a condition where he has not had a solid poop in over 6 months. These special gussets have helped save his clothing even in his worst blow ours.

Personal feedback: I ordered my first two Rump.a.rooz used and I received them quickly. Yet, I ordered a one size Rump.a.rooz directly from the owner soon after. I am still waiting on that diaper months later. I understand each diaper is home-made in her home, yet the wait is starting to get to me. I have heard of mothers being on the list so long that when it comes their turn they have to tell the owner to make one size larger because they had grown out of the size they ordered in the first place.

I had heard great reviews and raves about Rump.a.rooz before I made my first purchase so I was very excited to try them out. My son is oddly built. He is very skinny and short for his age. I was not getting a good fit with a lot of my other cloth diapers and I was looking for a great diaper to add to his stash.

When I first received my Rump.a.rooz in the mail I was impressed at the fit of the diaper. The diaper fit well on his skinny body. The tabs were pulled as tight as they could go and I was happy because I knew the diaper would last us a few months in fit. I ordered mediums and I was glad I did. I had been debating to order a large because I was worried my son would outgrow the mediums quickly, yet the mediums fit him very good with a lot of room to grow. If I had ordered a large like I had thought of, he would have been drowning in his diaper.

Also when I first got my diaper I feel in love with the insert. The insert that came with the diaper was great. It was made of high quality micro fiber material and quilted with many layers. It held up to even my son's heavy peeing. The insert itself made me want more.

After extended wear in the diaper I started getting a little depressed, because I really wanted to LOVE them. The diapers were leaving harsh red indents on my child's inner legs. The inner gussets were totally awesome for holding all my child's leaks in, including his massive amount of poop, yet they were also digging into his thighs and seemed to make him uncomfortable.

The Velcro on the diapers also bothered me. One of his tabs slide up when I pulled his onesie over his head and the velcro on the diaper rubbed against his skin. The Velcro is sharp and it hurts.

The first time I washed the diapers I had issues getting the wet and soaked with pee insert out of the diaper. My small hands barely fit into the slit of the pocket in back of the diaper. I struggled pulling out the insert.

I also had a hard time with the "laundry shut velcro tabs". While the laundry tabs are great for wash-day; less chance of snagging the stretchy sides with them being so ""close"", the tabs were very hard to undo. You have to hold the loop tab out of the way while trying to affix your hook tab to the body of the diaper. I struggled with that for quite some time.

Another issue I had on wash day was the fact I noticed, my diapers were starting to look piled. Both the diapers I had ordered were flannel prints and while the flannel prints are very cute after the initial washing they already pilly. I was depressed because I had followed the washing directions to the mark and to have the diapers pile so quickly made me angry.

I contacted Julie, the owner and she told me that I could help that issue by hanging my diapers out to dry or even tumble-drying them on low. While this helped keep the piling from getting too bad on future washes, my diapers still piled a little bit more then other brands.

The owner, Julie is a great person to work with. She has been very prompt on answering all my questions and emails. You can tell she puts a lot of heart into her work. She is always willing to take ideas from the people who buy her diapers and will fix any problems they have with the diapers they have ordered. Julie has been a joy to work with and is even open to custom sizes. She goes out of her way to make people happy.

Where to buy? Rump.a.rooz diapers may be bought at the Rump.a.rooz webpage: http://www.rumparooz.com/. They may also be found rarely on diapering forms and eBay. Orders may also be placed through Julie herself or on the Rump.a.rooz group on myspace.

Rating: Overall, I would give Rump.a.rooz a 3. There are a lot of features I really love about these diapers and if they did not leave red marks on my child's legs and did not pile as fast I would have a whole stash of them. I really love the great customer service of the owner and the workmanship of the diapers. You can tell the owner really puts heart into each diaper. I am waiting for my one size diaper still and can not wait to try it out. This time I have ordered a polyester print and I am told they do not pile like the flannel diapers I have in my stash now. I have also ordered a new feature on Rump.a.rooz, SNAPS!, which will help greatly with the issue I had about the laundry tabs. I also heard that the one size diapers may fit better then her previous diapers. Julie is always making new strides in her diapers and I am sure if she changes her pattern a little in the future and her diapers no longer cause red marks on my child's legs, I may order a lot more diapers from her. Till then, I will stick to my other diapers in my stash.

rumparooz are made in China, not the USA. they have not been made in the USA for quite a few years

I am 100% against items made in China, and little did I know when I bought my Fuzzi Bunz that they were made in China. I wished I would have spent the money with a WAHM instead ! I guess this is what happens when you are uneducated about something. I had to use cloth diapers because my daughter is allergic to disposables. I also like how Pampers has an add placed right in this article - how convenient!

Great and thorough review! I love the idea of supporting a WAHM.

Great, extensive review! I'm sure that even though you didn't prefer some things about this product, Julie would appreciate your review. Even though you focused on some negatives, you also gave many positives. Great job! :-)
