Rumsfeld Resigns: Rober Gates Announced as Replacement
Defense Secretary Position Changes Hands in Wake of Election
Rumsfeld has long been a target of those opposed to the war in Iraq. Some Democrats are already celebrating the announcement, claiming this as yet another victory in an already victorious election.
The current University President of Texas A&M, Dr. Robert M. Gates, is set to replace Rumsfeld. Gates has a history of government service, which includes the Air Force and a long career with the CIA. Perhaps most telling is the fact that he served on the National Security Counsel under Presidents of both major parties. Gates has been with Texas A&M since 1999, moving from Dean to President in 2002.
Is this really a victory for anyone? Or was Rumsfeld all along just a scapegoat, a convenient direction to vent collective frustration over the conflict in Iraq? We can only wait and see what the future will bring.
