Run Away

"I can't take the yelling anymore.", Kendra said while reaching for her purse on the table. "You are scaring the baby!". She always knew this marriage wouldn't work out. She had been fooling herself for two years now. At first everything was great when they first got together, although he was strangely too attached. This attachment turned into a controlling anger the spread like a vicious disease within his heart. Over time she endured physical, mental and sexual abuse from this man. Afraid to leave because of fear of what he might do to her. Many times this man threatened her life and their daughters.

"They'll never find you.", he said in a hateful voice. "I'll kill you and throw your body in a river, dismember you and nobody would even know!" His stare was cold a evil. Crying Kendra fell to the floor. "Stop, just stop!" Running upstairs she grabbed her small child out of bed only to be greeted at the bedroom door with him blocking the way. "You don't dare take my child from me.", he said frantically. "I'll kill myself and her if you think your leaving me!" Pushing by him she ran down the stairs grabbing the car keys, what change was on the table and her purse. Running out into the bitter cold air she hurriedly leaped for her truck. Behind her she could her the coursing's of what sounded like Satan close behind her. After buckling her child in her seat she quickly drove off. "Damn!, no gas." The red light was on her dash board, it felt like it lit up the whole car. Turning onto the busy streets speeding to a gas station. Tire screeching could be heard and soon after she saw him in the rear view mirror.

He followed closely behind her driving up close to the bumper and trying to push her off the road. "Pull over!" he shouted. Profanities and evil stares came from him in the car behind her. Embarrassed and scared she ran a red light trying to get away. Soon she lost him the the traffic. Pulling into a local gas station she dug through her purse trying to find some change. "Damn, only two dollars." The gas attendant came up. "$20.00 please." she said signaling him to hurry. A minute later the attendant came back. "I'm sorry Mame but your card says its invalid."

Her heart pounding, she started to cry. He canceled by bank card she thought. "Here, I have only two dollars, I need just enough to get out of here." Handing him the two dollars she tried holding back her tears as her baby cried in the back seat. The attendant could tell something was wrong. A few minutes later he came back and said, "I put two extra dollars in there now go and be careful." She quickly sped off onto the main highway headed to her uncle's house.

Later that night while at her uncle's house Kendra received threatening phone calls from her husband Tyler. He threatened suicide then to kill her and her family. Kendra quickly called the police and notified them of what was going on. They came and picked her taking her to a safe house out in the country. That night Kendra was finally able to get some rest. Feeling safe and secure her and her daughter Elisabeth nestled up and got some sleep.

That morning Kendra called up a lawyer, child protective services and the police department. She made plans to return to her mother's house in the next state over. The following day she took a flight with her baby in tow back home to her mom's. Upon her arrival she went to the police and told them of what happened back in Oregon. A protective order was put into place. She then went to a lawyer and filed for divorce and child protective services and notified them of the abuse she and her daughter endured. She had her feet well planted. Feeling confident she went back to her mothers house to rest for the day. All was settled and she was safe.

A couple of days past and she let her guard down. She returned home late one evening with her mother, sister and daughter. After pulling into the garage everybody got out of the car. As the door began to close out came this male figure. Standing there was Tyler. His face was red and his eyes dark. They all ran into the house locking the door behind them. Her sister ran upstairs checking all the doors and widows. Tyler began beating on the door, and kicking it. He screamed and yelled while changing which door he was pounding against. Kendra grabbed the phone and called the police. Minutes felt like years while waiting for them to show up. Soon they arrived and arrested him. Kendra shaken up told them police what happened and thankfully shook their hand for coming to her aid.

The next day she received a phone call, it was him again. She quickly called the police. They said that he was just bounded out and they will go pick him up again. Her court date came up and it was time for her to testify against him. He went on frantically to the court that they were in love and had dirtied their marriage. He stated that they were to marry again. He also claimed he did not know the "rules" of the protective order and it wasn't his fault for violating it. After the court proceeding she walked out disgusted and confused, her lawyer pulled her to the side with and officer. "You better go and change your appearance so he doesn't recognize you." her lawyer stated. "Cut your hair, change the color and take different routes to and from home for the time being."
Taking the advice in Kendra asked the police officer what more can be done. He advised her to leave the state and go into hiding, that there is nothing in the custody order that says you can't leave the area.

Heeding their advice she changed her appearance. The following day she made arrangements to leave the area with her daughter. She drove 2,000 miles stopping only for gas. She wanted to put as much distance between her and Tyler as possible. She found a small town, a great place she thought to raise her daughter. Kendra applied to change her name and filled out an application for a small rent house. There her and Elisabeth settled into their peaceful environment. Kendra and Elisabeth to this day still have nightmares of what happened to them. But they are only nightmares and nothing more. They haven't heard from or seen Tyler in over 6 years.

Elisabeth is doing well in second grade and playing basketball. Kendra found herself a new job working for a tax consulting company. Recently Kendra got married to a local police officer and had a new baby. Her life is looking up now for she got away.
