Take time to learn the game world before diving in too deep. Go online to the Runescape world map and download, even print a copy of it to keep by your computer when you are playing. I spent far too long getting hopelessly lost, even in the free-to-play region of Runescape. When I finally did get oriented, I had wasted plenty of valuable gaming time. This is very important to newbs to remember, even more so if you have not played an MMORPG before. Note the danger areas, where Player-Vs-Player (PVP) combat is allowed and don't accidentally end up there without an easy escape plan.
Make friends. Better yet, get people you know in real life (IRL) to play Runescape with you. Massively Multi Player Online Role Playing Games are far more entertaining and enjoyable when you have a group of friends to play with routinely. Runescape was fairly frustrating in the beginning for me, especially since it was my first MMORPG, but once I got several of my school buddies to join me online, everything became much more pleasant. If you do not know anyone to play Runescape with IRL, make friends through the game. However, be cautious, as there are plenty of people eager to trick and pwn you online. Remember, the Internet is not a nice place!
Watch out for scams. While this has been greatly cut back on, there are still hordes of players trying their best to lie, cheat and steal from other players. The most common scam when I played was the "Give me your armor and I will turn it into Rune armor for free/money." For completely newb players, this can be super tempting, especially if the player offering this has been nice to them before. However, this is almost always a scam, and you will never get your armor/sword/shield back after you trade with them. Don't be that poor player that falls for these scams! For people that have played MMOs for any length of time, such scammy transactions should be easy to spot and avoid, but stay vigilant nonetheless. Gold and mother money in Runescape is hard enough to earn, don't lose it by giving away your hard-earned items to scammers.
There are loads of good Runescape merchandise guides and how-tos online. Use these to decide how best to spend your time and what path you want to take your character in. Every time you level up, you can move your character towards different skills. Don't do this willy-nilly, instead, have a focused plan on how you want to build you online persona. Finally, watch out for offers of powerleveling, macros, bots, offers to buy run escape gold or other questionable practices. When I played, many of these practices where prohibited by Jagex (the company behind Runescape ) and players engaging in such behavior could possibly be banned. Basically, take the time to learn about Runescape using the online guides and maps, and avoid making the dumb mistakes that so many newb players make when starting to play this popular MMORPG, and you probably will have an excellent online gaming experience!
