Running Back Travis Henry, from NFL Star to a Life Behind Bars

Travis Henry is currently in jail, adding another sad chapter to his once promising life. Henry enjoyed a good collegiate career at the University of Tennessee, winning a championship with the team in 1998. After a successful senior year, Henry was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the second round of the NFL draft. In his professional career, Henry would have some highs and lows while playing for Buffalo, Tennessee and Denver.

Henry earned a pro-bowl birth, rushed for over 1,000 yards in a season three times, and finished with over 6,000 yards rushing, and 40 touchdowns for his career. Unfortunately for Henry, his off the field behavior would negatively impact his football career. While a member of the Denver Broncos, his third team, Henry would face suspension on chargers that he used a banned substance, marijuana. Though he won his appeal, Henry would be released by Denver the next year, and test positive for marijuana months later. At that time, Henry was banned from the NFL for a year.

At times during his career, Travis Henry played like a great NFL running back. He could've enjoyed a nice lucrative career, instead he finds himself once again in trouble with the law, serious trouble. While on bail awaiting sentencing for his drug trafficking charge, Henry was arrested for alcohol use, a violation of his probation.

What a tragedy, this talented player couldn't stay on the football field, due to drug use and personal issues, including fathering 11 children with 10 women. I hope Travis Henry gets help at some point. Maybe prison will give him time to reflect on his mistakes, and make him a better man and father. Henry will never play in the NFL again, never sign a million dollar contract. As unfortunate as that is, it pales in comparison to the mess Henry has made of his life and his children's. The NFL should use Henry as an example to young players coming in the league, maybe his heartbreaking story can help detour other young men from making the same mistakes.
