Running Out of Article Ideas?

John Watson
For those of us who write a lot here at Associated Content, and other similar type sites, the question is always asked, "Where do you get all your ideas from?" I have a number of different things that I do that help me come up with new and exciting things to write about.

1. Always carry a notepad and pen. I never go anywhere without them. It's amazing how many ideas spring to mind when I am out and about. Something that may seem ordinary and everyday may just spark an idea and you'll want to get that down on paper before you forget. It's also very handy if you are going to a new restaurant, or one you've never been to before. I take notes on everyhting from the menu, to the service, to the look and ambience of the place and can usually rattle off a review in no time just by consulting those notes. It does drive my wife a little crazy though when I'm scribbling away furiously over dinner...it might help to go alone to avoid any spousal angst.

2. Read the newspaper or watch the news every day. There is always something new and topical to talk about, whether it be politics, entertainment, or some funny fluff piece that catches your attention. We all have viewpoints on pretty much all the subjects we see or read and commiting them to paper is a great way to stamp out any writers block you may be having.

3. Keep a dream journal. The content of your dreams are sometimes amazing and if you don't jot them down right away, it's amazing how quickly they will pop out of your head. I've dreamt about things that I would never have though about writing on, but with a little research, I am able to piece together a passable article on just about any subject.

4. Try out new products. Next time you go grocery shopping, or any other type of shopping for that matter, steer away from the products you normally always buy and try a different or newer brand. You may end up liking it more than your regular, and will have the tools to now write a product review. You could also try shopping at a different store or mall tha normal and write about that.

5. Write about something you are passionate about. If it's a particular sport for example. You could write about the history of the team, past players, current player profiles, season previews, and endelss other topics related to the team or sport in general. If you like camping or hiking, then discuss great campsites or trails that you've gone on. The Ideas from this are almost endless.

Those are just a few of the methods that I use and you may want to use them in conjunction with your own. I hope this has helped if you are struggling with a bad case of writers block or are a first timer here at AC and in need of some help.....good luck, and keep writing.

I'm just getting started here on AC and the taking notes idea was recommended by a friend. She has become my AC mentor and pointed me to several articles. Through those articles I found yours and have to say how clear and concise it is. Thank you. It made sense to me and I will be bookmarking it for future reference as I continue here on AC.

I do the notebook thing as well. I also scan over google trends and yahoo buzz as well.

I do the "notebook" routine but there are times that I can't make heads or tails of what I wrote a week (or even a day) later. Great article!

Great ideas! I was talking to a friend today about running out of ideas and she suggested the notepad and writing them down as I think about them, too. I am going to start doing that.
