Running Shoe Product Review: Nike Pegasus 2006

The Nike Pegasus is a great running shoe for runners with a neutral footstrike. It is highly cushioned with a full-length Air Sole and a full-length phylon midsole. The 2006 version of the Nike Pegasus weighs in at 12.4 ounces, which is about average for a full-cushioned running shoe. The color options are red/white or white/yellow/silver for men and white/green/silver or white/grey/blue for women. The average price for a pair of Nike Pegasus running shoes is $80.

As a running shoe, I have found no equal to the Nike Pegasus. It has enough cushioning to last much longer than most shoes I have tried, but yet is light enough to wear for faster tempo-paced runs. I have routinely put 500 miles on each pair of my Nike Pegasus running shoes without any noticeable wear or structural damage. However, I must stress that these running shoes are only advised for runners with a neutral footstrike, as they do not provide motion control or stability, only cushioning.

One drawback to the Nike Pegasus running shoe is its weight. While 12.4 ounces is reasonable for a cushioned shoe, a lighter shoe is usually needed for faster workouts and speedwork. For Nike Pegasus enthusiasts, there is a lighter version of the Pegasus that can be used for these sessions of fast running. These shoes are called the Nike Pegasus TC, and they weigh only 9.8 ounces.

The Nike Pegasus running shoe is great for running on both the road and trails. The new models feature a Bareflex outsole cushion pattern which provides flex grooves for greater traction and toe-off. One thing that I have noticed about this Bareflex patterning is that it tends to kick up mud onto the back of my legs. I run in large groups and I am routinely the only one with any mud on me, so if you like to stay clean, these shoes may not be for you.
