Running Trails in Michigan's Upper Peninsula

I came to Michigan almost a decade ago to visit a friend. Once I was here, I didn't want to leave. The air smells sweeter here. The people are friendlier and the scenery will have you convinced God took his time here. If you happen to find yourself in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, there are some splendid running trails and State Parks you have to experience: the Algonquin Trail, the North Country Trail, Brimley State Park, and Tahquamenon Falls State Park.

The Algonquin Trail can be found right in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan. This is a quiet little trail winding itself through the forest. This running trail is used as a cross country ski trail in the winter, but in the summer, birch and oak trees close in around you, leaving you with a feeling of isolation, even though a bustling little city is five minutes away. Before entering the trail you can check the map to plan your route. There are options along the way to challenge you a little more with steeper hills or longer trails. This is a great trail for beginners and more advanced runners. Flowers blooms along the route which leads you over wooden walking bridges, alongside tinkling creeks, and you may even see deer and rabbit. There are other trails offering fabulous scenery within an hour of Sault Sainte Marie.

The North Country Trail is a great example of a closer running trail. The North Country Trail is a breath-taking trail meandering from New York to North Dakota, offering you the chance to go as far as your legs can carry you. Our section of the North Country Trail is perfect for a run on a hot summer day. This trail is a little more challenging than the Algonquin Trail, but the view is worth it!

These are just two of the hundreds of trails throughout the Upper Peninsula. Brimley State Park and Tahquamenon Falls State Park are two places you can find heart-wrenching beauty and challenging running trails. My favorite trail runs along the Tahquamenon Falls, leading from the Upper Falls to the Lower Falls. When you get done with your run, you can pop into the Brewery at the Lower Falls for a tall glass of ice cold root beer.
