Runway to Real Life: The New Fall Colors

The leaves aren't the only things that change their colors come fall. Designers also embrace a deeper richer color palette. On the fall '08 runway, the colors of Donna Karan's jersey dresses in moss and burnt red, looked as though they could have been plucked right from the trees in Central Park in late October. A rich pumpkin orange also showed up on the runways of Ports 1961, Narciso Rodriguez, Alessandro Dell Acqua, John Galliano, Akris and Dior. A beautiful Chartreuse Green was used by Proenza Schouler, Nina Ricci, (a favorite designer of Reese Witherspoon) and YSL.

What Works for You

When thinking about how you can work color into your wardrobe for fall, think about your own skin tone. Although it might make your girlfriend's eyes sparkle, that beautiful plum top can leave you with dark circles if the shade isn't right for your coloring. If your skin has yellow undertones proceed with caution when it comes to greens. If you have red undertones be careful which shades of oranges and reds you choose near your face. Of course you can always wear the color away from your face, and choose an elegant pant in one of the rich autumn shades, even if it would look horrid next to your face. Another great option is legwear. Many of the designers showed colored tights with more a neutral colored outfit in black or navy, which is a fantastic way to be on-trend without breaking your budget.

Find it for Less

Look to all your favorite stores like Target, Express, Forever 21, Club Monaco, Nordstroms and Macy's to be carrying plenty of color options this fall. A silk top in a beautiful mossy green is just the thing to make your basic black pant from two years ago feel current, so choose pieces with impact, then thread them into what you already own.
