Rush Limbaugh Being a Part of the NFL

Would Rush Limbaugh Add or Take from the Spirit of Sport

The owner's association I don't believe will okay the sell because of Rush's divisive statements, which he admitted by the way on the Today Show interview, is playing to his fan base. But as the issue of race continues to be front and center some things become puzzling. I have heard many speak about competition and the dangers involved in the PC aspect of letting a kid play without keeping score and all of that nonsense. Anyone who has been a part of any team sport, rather it be a softball team at work or the high school football team, you know you want the best players on your team. High school football tryouts weed out the kids who won't make it on the field of battle do they not?

So Rush's proclaiming that football is like the Bloods and Crips without the guns says what? Football, basketball, baseball, track and field has no Affirmative Action component to it. They try out and the best players win their positions. The guy who can bust through a line and avoid tackles and has breakaway speed becomes a running back. Race has nothing to do with that and the man better suited for that position will get it. For some reason, and I agree with the statement that Jimmy The Greek took flak for, blacks seem to fit that position better. At one time they didn't believe that a black man could lead the team as quarterback and then someone decided to challenge that and Doug Williams led the Redskins to a Super Bowl victory. Now the league has a number of Pro Bowl black quarterbacks. The same applies to the coaching staff yet now Tony Dungee is one of the most respected coaches ever in the league with other black coaches leading teams to conference titles. This is a sport of men PERIOD.

I always thought of sport as I have the military. It is about teamwork and it matters not what color the man next to you is but how well they do their assigned duty. Each team is made up of a group with a common purpose a common goal and anything that distracts from that goal is counterproductive to the team spirit. Just from some of the statements he has made about men, who put in all on the line for love of sport and team, Rush Limbaugh is counterproductive to a team's spirit. In that programming note Rush spoke of money and yes the athletes get paid well but the owners make much more and they don't put their bodies on the line every Sunday not only for the money but for the love of sport, the love of competition, the love of those who go into battle beside you and with you. I personally don't see how Rush could ever be accepted into that elite league of individuals judging from his past statements. And will these same "Bloods and Crips" be willing to put their bodies on the line for an owner who clearly does not respect them?

Sport transcends so much in America. On any given day or night in America we cheer together and let out collective sighs of disappointment together while watching our athletes put it on the line for our entertainment. On Any Given Sunday across all time zones, all partisanship, all color lines, all religious affiliations looking at a 3rd and long a collective breath is held as the snap is made, the quarterback steps into the pocket, he avoids the blitz from the freight train of a linebacker and unleashes the long ball downfield as the wide receiver sprints like a gazelle along the sideline. The ball falls perfectly into the receiver's arms without him breaking stride and he dives past the goal line for a touchdown.

Right then across all those differences mentioned a cheer goes up throughout America. Men, women and children feel and express the same rush of emotion at the very same time. Sometimes it is not even a team they like but it was just the damn play! For that one wonderful exciting second we are ONE! Whether it is in exaltation or exasperation at that moment we are closer than at any other time during the week. At that moment it doesn't really matter if the quarterback was Manning or McDabb or the receiver was Steve Smith or Wes Welker. What A Play!!!! I guess the question would be will Rush Limbaugh diminish that feeling for even one game?
