RV for Free: Enjoy the RV Lifestyle Without Emptying Your Pockets

RV for Free How to work your way around the USA - People who enjoy RVing are like a brotherhood. Most of the people you meet seem to be joined together by a love of getting away from it all, seeing the country, and avoiding costly hotel bills. With the price of gas today, many people are cutting back on their travels, yet if you have time to spare, usually a month or more, you might want to consider this way to go. My husband and I were introduced to Workamping several years ago as a result of my web surfing. We had a travel trailer we loved to use and we are retired so we are not tied to a schedule. Also, it served a purpose for us, giving us a place to camp free, save some money that normally went to house payments, and look for a home in an area we wanted to move to.

We were lucky to find a workamping job in an area we enjoyed, close to the water, good fishing, and easy work. We stayed at this job for six months before moving into our new home. Last summer we decided to get away again to another area of Florida, and workamped for 3 months in the Miami area. Again, it was close to the water, the weather was pleasant, and we were able to live amidst the mangos and avocados. In addition to a free campsite, we received free total hookup, internet, cable, use of all facilities and a discount in the campground store and for LP gas. Best of all, we got all these benefits for a commitment of 24 to 40 hours a week. One or both of us could work the hours. With the 24 hour commitment, we were paid for all hours worked over that and with the 40 hour week we were paid for all hours worked. Even though it was minimum wage or just above, it was money-saving for us. In addition, we had time to see the surrounding area, time for recreation, and the chance to meet some great people and make some wonderful friends we continue to see or keep in touch with.

Most workamping or campground host positions allow enough time off to enjoy the surrounding area. However, longer term positions are available for those who decide to RV full time. Campgrounds and RV parks abound in this country, especially in desirable areas for recreation and sight seeing.

For retired military personnel or disabled vets with MWR privileges, there are many military posts and recreation areas with beautiful campgrounds. These facilities also use volunteer hosts, again trading site hookups and facilities use in exchange for a minimum of hours of volunteer work. For those of us into the RV lifestyle, this may be a way to see our beautiful country without digging deep into our pockets.
