RV Parks and Campgrounds in Northeast Colorado

Where to Camp when You're Visiting Northeast Colorado

MH Bonham
Northeast Colorado is full of surprises with its wide open plains and expansive grasslands. Just in the shadows of the Rocky Mountains, you can see abundant wildlife and enjoy the impressive scenery of the "Colorado Outback." When you're RVing, you have plenty of choices for visiting Northeast Colorado. Check out what Northeast Colorado has to offer.

Geography

Northeastern Colorado is an often looked-over portion of the state but has beauty in its own right. While the Colorado gold rush drove fortune-seekers into Colorado's mountains, farmers sought a different gold here -- one of golden wheat. Much of this area is flat, dotted with small farm communities. This is the home of the Pawnee National Grasslands with the 500 ft Pawnee Buttes and one of the last short-grass prairies in the nation.

See Living Sculptures

Not far from the Pawnee National Grasslands is Sterling, Colorado and the Buffalo Hills RV Park. This RV Park is located just off I-76 and is conveniently within range of the National Grasslands where you can see antelope, deer, hawks, eagles, foxes and other wildlife. Within the town of Sterling, you can see living sculptures carved from trees including "Skygrazers" and "Metamorphosis." Learn about the Overland Trail -- a heavily traveled trail by goldrush miners and homesteaders -- at the Overland Trail Museum about a mile away from the RV site.

Buffalo Hills RV Park has WiFi, swimming pool, horseshoe pit, laundry facilities, playground and restrooms.

On The Border

Just west of Kansas is the little town of Wray, Colorado and Hitch 'N Post Campground RV Park. They have covered picnic tables, restrooms, coin operated showers, laundry with coin operated washer and dryer, and three 3 horse corrals available. You can fish at Stalker Lake or right beside the river. You can watch the abundant wildlife including deer, pheasants, prairie chickens and prairie dogs.

Ninety Minutes from Denver and Colorado Springs

Just 90 minutes from Denver and Colorado Springs is Limon, Colorado, where you can find the KOA Limon Campground. This RV park has WIFI, cable TV, snack bar, swimming pool and bicycle rentals.

While you're in Limon, check out the Limon Depot Museum, the Limon Wetlands, or Limon Heritage Museum and Railroad Park for a bit of history and nature for free.

Considerations

Be sure to contact the RV campgrounds and reserve a site months in advance as campgrounds in Colorado tend to fill quickly.
