When people come to Florida, they usually don't equate the sunshine state with camping. Florida is famous for Disney World, its pristine beaches and nightlife, yet there is so much more waiting for the people who wish to discover Florida's truly natural atmosphere. Or you can do it all from New Smyrna Beach, which is conveniently located off I-95, easy access to all points of interest.
Florida can be an RV camper's dream destination. The rare environment consists of blended ecosystems, especially in the Edgewater/New Smyrna Beach areas, in close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, yet situated on the mainland. Residents and tourists are surrounded by old Florida ruins, rivers, fresh-water fishing, birds and more. There are many places for naturalists, ample opportunities to learn about the "real Florida," while bonding with wild creatures, and the family too.
In New Smyrna Beach there are some good stops for camping all along Old Mission Road; a winding, old country back-road that connects the residential area of Edgewater, to Route-44 in New Smyrna Beach. Along this road is the Sugar Mill Ruins Travel Park, a perfect spot for camping in Florida's own "backyard," yet in close proximity to all the amenities and restaurants that Daytona and New Smyrna Beach has to offer.
This area is fantastic, because this travel park is on one hundred prime acres of untouched land, yet in the center of a thriving metropolis. Its almost like one travels down this road from the busy world, and feels lost in another dimension.
Set back on the property are the grounds, that include acres of untouched land, including rivers for canoing and fishing, hiking trails and more. In the front of the property, near the entrance, is a solar-heated pool, playground and areas for shuffleboard, horseshoes, basketball and other traditional fun and games. There are amenities on the premises for various needs, and many people bring their campers and RVs. Some people just bring tents. During Bike Week, at the end of February and the beginning of March, many bikers like to camp out underneath the stars. This is a good time to come, for the weather is only chilly at night. April and May are good times as well, before the weather turns too hot. There is even a convenience store, just in case you run out of camping gear. This is a great way to stay on the grounds without ruining the naturalist atmosphere with a trip to busy Route-44 and the local Wal-Mart.
If you need to go to a bigger store, like Wal-Mart, its right down the road, heading to I-95. Here one can find many popular chain restaurants as well. Route-44 also leads to the beaches and bridge that takes you from the mainland to the beach-side area. There are some beautiful naturalist locations on beach-side not to be missed. There is so much to do for the traditional camper and Florida enthusiast who wishes to combine travel, with RV camping in a pristine environment near the beach. The kids shouldn't get bored on this trip!
