Ryan Kwanten - Hollywood's Aussie Boys Series #1

With No Formal Acting Training, Australian Ryan Kwanten is Doing All Right in TV and Movies in Hollywood

Susan Jane
This is the first of a series about Australia's Hollywood Boys - young actors who have had a start in Australian TV and/or movies and have moved to LA to make it big.

Who is Ryan Kwanten?

Ryan Kwanten is an Australian actor (born 28 November 1976) who has toughed it out and is starting to make a name for himself after 8 years in tinsel town. 34 year old Kwanten is currently in Australia to promote his latest movie Red Hill. After his trip back down-under, Ryan will return to Hollywood where he is the star of the hit vampire series, True Blood in his character Jason Stackhouse. He has been playing this role since 2008.

Ryan Kwanten has no formal acting training

So how did a young Aussie guy with no formal acting training do so well for himself in one of the toughest businesses? He got his start in the popular, long-running Australian soap opera Home and Away playing lifeguard Vinnie Patterson in the fictitious Summer Bay seaside town north of Sydney. Kwanten said he had no acting experience before Home and Away and was grateful they gave him a shot.

Kwanten has appeared in popular US television shows Summerland portraying Jay Robertson and Law & Order: SVU, with film roles in Don't Fade Away, Flicka, American Brown and Dead Silence.

Ryan Kwanten's new Australian movie role

Red Hill is an action thriller set in a small, Australian country town (Red Hill). He plays Shane Cooper, a young Police Officer with a pregnant wife (Alice - played by Claire van der Boom). After a prison break, Cooper's first day on the job turns to panic and a nightmare of revenge and redemption.

He said "Red Hill is a beautiful journey, loaded with action and a bit of romance."

Kwanten has also reported he didn't have much time to prepare for the role.

"I went from the heat of Louisiana to the cold in Victoria," Kwanten said.

"It was trial by fire.

"Imagine four weeks of unadulterated adrenaline."

The Aussie hunk might lack professional acting training, but he talks of his life experience being exciting.

"I've lived a very adventurous life," he said.

"I've has my share of trials and tribulations.

"Life was my acting training."

Back to the US for more of True Blood and another Aussie movie in the pipeline

The busy actor will return to the US this month to film the new season of True Blood. After that he is due to come back to Oz to film another movie. In a few years' time, Kwanten hopes to move back to Australia to live. Quite a few successful Australian movie and TV actors manage their careers in Hollywood while having a home base in Australia - Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths are just some who have made this dual location work for themselves and their families.

I like his character on True Blood. You would never know he is an Aussie from his accent on the show. I would not have known he didn't have any acting training. He does a good job.
